for a while now my cat has been rattling when i first turn on the car when it's cold and the engine sits at about 1500rpm. discovered that the cat pipe is vibrating inside the flange where it connects up to the rest of the cat-back exhuast piping. just tooke it by the Meineke shop and had them put it up on the lift. the mgr. came out and looked at it and i told him what was wrong and he just tack welded it for me for free! free labor performed on my car makes me a damn happy man.

anyone ever try to weld anything by themselves? i saw a welding setup for sale in a pawn shop a few weeks ago and got kinda curious.

 

all the muffler guys i have delt with have been cool as hell

 

George Foreman also likes Meineke.

I have a similar rattle when i first start my car too, however i haven't been able to track down the source, think its more int he muffler then cat this time (had a cat problem before)

I do have a question, can you still switch out your cat if you need to? Cause thats something id still want the option of doing if i wanted to. If i had a problem with the cat id want to just replace it and not the b-pipe as well cause they are welded together.

i gotta give props to Meineke too. When i put my short shifter in the bottom of the shifter was too small for the u bracket thing on my shift linkage so i just rigged it up w/washers and all. and the shifter also hit the piping on my N1 exhaust when i would shift. i took it to meineke and they helped me out. they fixed the gap, and cut off some extra piece of metal so it wouldn't hit the exhaust piping. they did it for free too, i was happy.

 

nakago76, yeah you can still switch out your cat. i only got my cat welded to the flange that connects the cat to the rest of the piping. the flange is a totally separate piece from the rest of the exhaust piping...so if you do this you'll be fine. the rattle near the back of your car is probably one of the rubber mount/hangers. my very rear hanger kind of shakes and makes a stupid sound.
