A lot of times the gears are just misaligned, try shifting into first or third before you shift into reverse. I do this habitually in my '01, its a pretty common thing on our cars.

On a lot of manuals in general. I have an old GMC Truck I have to do the same thing to and an old 89 Toyota that I have to shift into 1st or 3rd then go to reverse.

I have repaired many H22 transmissions with this problem. Usually, the 5/R slider sleeve is damaged on the opposite side of the "lost" gear, burred badly enough that one cannot pull the sleeve thru the slider to engage the opposing gear. (Grind 5th: lose reverse. Grind reverse: lose 5th)

Parts and labor to repair this issue through a reputable shop could cost as much as a used transmission in today's market... but at least you would know what you have then. A used trans is always a crap-shoot.

My trans. does the same thing. We should rebuild ours.. as Motorvations suggested, but if you open that thing up, might as well add a performance upgrade...LSD!!! Quaife or MFactory is what will be going in mine soon.
