Its pretty damn awesome, it has a "bogie" alert feature which gives you audible and visual notification when state patrolers are around

hey guys, there was an article about that exact product in Sport Compact Car i think. They say its pretty good for the price but sometimes didnt go off even when a cop car just cruised by cuz it picks up certain signals off of agency cars depending on each state. So they are supposed to come preprogrammed to detect the repeater signal for the designated law enforcement agencies in your region. They conducted the test in CA from i think SD or just so cal to up state Cali.
Yea, i wanted one awhile ago but after checkin a few review online that thing that detect the repeater signal on cop radio's doesn't work that great. What did scc say though? never read that review. Another BAD thing is that most cities are converting to a digital system now so u can't even scan the cops w/ this. However, u can still use it to listen to the drive through mechines, haha.
It does have one drawback -the antenna.
This was one of the cons SCC mentioned even tho they only had 2
It can be replaced with a much better one
As for the Repeater Signal-Cops are able to turn it off due to them being off duty, going to court, etc.
They did say however that nearly every time the unit went off there was a patrol car nearby, So I think that maybe the signal was not turned on for some reason in the other cases
SCC only wrote a small review on the unit,it really wasnt that great of a review the reasons why I bought it is because its decently priced, You can take it out and plug it into your house and I enjoy listening to realtime incidents
Just in case your wondering what came in the kit
-Unit
-2 antennas (car&home)
-AC Jack
-lighter Plug
-hardwire with fuse
-Mounting bracket
Frequency booklet and manual etc
Its a great unit

i know here in ct unless you have a permit, having scanner equiment in your car is illegal. but if your vol. fire or ems you can get a permit to use it. i had a old hand held unit that worked great...
illegal or not that doesn't matter to me, i jus wanna know if that repeater signal would work w/ the new digital units that the police are now using, i think LAPD is the only one using it now but i think almost all cities in cali are started to change to that APCO digital system or watever the hell it's called. uniden does make a scanner for that but it doesn't have that repeater thing on it. and it cost a shiet load more
yea those things are cool....
...if you want to sit outside a burger king parking lot and hear what the workers inside are talking about on their headsets inside...
other than that... useless.

Hey, might wanna be careful installing one of those things in your car. It's considered "Obstruction of Justice" in FL if it's 'installed' in your vehicle... I have a different brand/model scanner, but it's not installed in my car. If you're interested in the laws, check about 3/4 down this page:

As far as listening to fast food drive-thru's, I've done that a few times.
Last time I ordered a small drink, paid for it at the first window, and then when they gave it to me I was like "No no, I had the 2x double cheese burger, 2x large fries and 2x large Cokes"... (The order belonging to the guy behind me) Yeah maybe it's a cheap thrill, but it's fun nonetheless.
Yeah, you need the antenna. Without it you'll get very little range. As far as the handheld units, they have a smaller antenna but it's 'freq matched'. They don't get as much range as the desktop models with the longer antennas. You can't use your FM antenna, as far as I know. (Yes, I used to work at Radio Shack.)
Only half true. Most areas are switching to a 'digital' system, known as a 'trunking' system. The model at the top of this thread is a trunking scanner so it will get the police radios if programmed properly. (Programming can be a real pain in the ***.)
There's really only one kind of digital system that 99% of scanners make, and it's a Uniden system... don't remember what it's called though. You can get a scanner from Uniden that will get it, but calling it 'expensive' would be an understatement.
One more thing (I know it's O/T), but when am I going to be able to post more than 5 messages in a 24 hour period? I'd ask in a forum where it's not O/T, but it won't let me. Also, I guess someone sent me a PM, but I don't have permission to view it yet. Every time I click a link/change pages it pops up a new window telling me "You do not have permission to use instant messaging."

Do u NEED to have that antenna?

Unfortunatley I don't know much about mounting scanner antennas in cars as it's illegal in FL w/o a license. The only thing I remember radioshack having was a cheap little window mount gimmick that held your antenna out the window (while the window is up). Kinda hard to describe.. I'm assuming that since this scanner looks like it's meant to be mounted in a car, it'll have some sort of instructions.
If anyone's interested in how trunking systems work, let me know, I'd be glad to share some knowledge.
As far as the radio shack commercials, don't count on it! hahaha. Most of the people that work at Radio Shack don't know much of anything at all.
Been to Radio Shack lately? If you have I'll bet you had to turn down a Direct TV system, a Sprint cell phone, and a Verizon cell phone all before you got your question(s) answered! (I used to hate having to do that.
this is my 5th post in a 24 hour period. See you guys in 24 hours.

Very true about the Radio Shack comment -they are always pushing to sell the sprint phones.
I just bought a window mounted (looks like a cell antenna) and hooked it on,made a difference but not as much as I would have liked.

i checked the specs on the one on top of the page and that doesn't have the trunk tracking feature. only the uniden bc780xlt have them. it included the TrunkTracker III which monitors the following systems: Motorola Type I, Type II and Type IIi Hybrid , EDACS Wideband 9600 Baud, EDACS Narrowband 4800 Baud and LTR systems. it's a lil more expensive but do u think it's worth it? will i be able to scan those new digital ones that the cops are using.

Overall it gets old pretty quickly, but without being able to listen to the police I'm not sure if there'd be much fun in it at all. Before you bother doing this look around online and see if you can find the frequencies for your local police/fire/EMS/etc., otherwise it's no fun. You will generally be using the Motorola Type I system. The common misconception with scanners is that you sit there and it scans every frequency looking for someone talking... which it does... however, you'll be bored of that after a minute or so because it's very time consuming. In order to get constant action you need to program your scanner with known frequencies (which can be found on the web). Hope this helps you make a more educated decision.
