Default 1997 Honda Prelude H22A4

Hey guys,

So I am buying a 1997 Honda Prelude with a H22A4 VTEC. I am fairly familiar with VTEC motors since the car that I currently have is a 1998 Accord with a F23A1 VTEC in it.

I have a couple questions as I am going to be meeting with our local import club and we hold races.

Mostly, I just want to know what are some basic bolt on parts and some basic engine tuning so I can get the most out of what I have with the least amount of money as I am trying to save for a turbo kit.

Also, getting more technical and such, from the research that I have compiled I have worked out that a H22A4 produces roughly 197hp. The car has some aftermarket parts the ones that I know of are; Megan Race Headers and Cat Back System, and cold air intake ( I am unsure of the make). So, with that being said how much hp could we say that the Prelude would have, just going off of basic knowledge.

Thanks guys I really appreciate it.

Be ready to replace those Megan parts in the near future. The muffler is known to burn out quickly and the welds on the header have been known to crack and leak, FYI.

Bolt-ons you're not going to be able to do a whole lot in the engine bay if you want it to work for turbo later. Spend your money on getting a good tuning platform and a good tune as it's something you will need for the turbo anyway. Other than that you can always work on handling upgrades (suspension, brakes, and tires).

prob a good idea to sleeve the block in the future for your turbo set up.

Thanks guys, I plan on getting a H22 Block and rebuilding so that I can run a good clean engine. I didn't know about the Megan parts, so thank you for that info. Good news is that I am glad to find out that it does have the VTEC kick but I am going to put it on a Dyno and adjust it so that it kicks when my torque range drops.

If it's tuned "correctly"/broadest torque curve, you shouldn't feel any kick; it should be a smooth crossover.

Yeah, you can feel the kick, its not to hard but it is deffinitely there. So I want to take it and put it on a Dyno and adjust the Vtec so that it is as close to be "Correct" as possible
