D16y7/y8 mini me questions...
Hey guys, I know this is a pretty popular question and a lot of people have done it but I'm just trying to get some more information about the classic mini me swap. I recently blew my d16y7 and purchased a motor from a friend assuming it was a y8 (like he had said). Come to find out its a y8 head on a y7 block with a y8 transmission. Ive done alot of research on it but I just wanna know what all I will need. So far I bought a standard p28 ecu, I was planning on ordering some arp headstuds, new head gasket and timing belt just because I dont wanna do it later. Any info would be helpful, im still semi new to this and this will be my first swap. Few questions like, what will I need other than what I have? how do I wire vtec? do I need a different wiring harness? or a coversion harness? I will post some pictures when I can, sadly were snowed in pretty good and my car is under about 2 feet of it
Ha. I know all about the snow. I'm in Nova Scotia too.
Ok, you need (you probably have most, if not all of this since it's already a mini-me):
Y8 intake manifold
Y8 fuel rail and injectors
Intake (since your throttle body will be in a different spot)
Y8 throttle body
Gaskets for all of the above.
Timing belt (Y8 and Y7 are the same )
OBD1/OBD2 conversion harness (needed with the P28 ECU - careful ordering this. The 96-98 ones are different than the 99-00)
The IACV wiring is different so that will have to be modified.
For the V-TEC:
Run a wire from the V-TEC solenoid to pin A8 on the ECU
For the V-TEC oil pressure sensor, one wire is to ground the other runs to pin C15 on the ECU.

Also to add, if you want to stick with OBD2, you can use a P2P ECU. You won't need a conversion harness but it will look for 2 O2 sensors and you will need to wire in a knock sensor.
Ah the mini me, when I first had mines I loved it more, you can feel the difference. Or maybe cuz I had the head port and polished, it screamed louder too. But later on I blew a bearing. I recommend some acl race bearings to help with the added compression. Thats all from my experience. Good luck with the setup
there's a good write-up in the faq sticky, 2nd ACL bearings will of course require him to open up the block and do any associated things when replacing bearings. Not a beginner task. OP just swap the head don't bother with other things it's not worth it.
p28 is obd 1 correct? would I need a new harness or just the conversion harness? is there such thing as an obd 1 or obd 2 wiring harness? or do i just add a few wires and get a conversion harness? appreciate the help
You just need a conversion harness and then run the wires for the v-tec solenoid and oil pressure sensor.

So even if the wiring harness that's in there is obd 1, all I would need is a sub harness jus to wire in the solinoid and knock sensor? I'm still kinda lost
If you car is a 95 (you didn't mention what trim, Si, Dx, CX, VX). If its not an Si you'll need to just wire up the VTEC solenoid and VTEC pressure switch. No need for the knock sensor on the P28. If your model is a CX or VX you'll have to do some additional oxygen sensor wiring. If you have an Si or DX no 02 wiring is needed. Reuse your Si or DX injectors, alternator and fuel injectors. The link I posted above answers all your questions however.
OK I think I understand, what about the O2 sensorsnwouldni have to do? Pretty sure its a cx , and also the intake air temperature sensor do I need to relocate that? Appreciate the help

How do you do the IACV? Is there any other wiring to do besides that and vtec? Is it just plug and play from the d16y7 harness to the obd2 - obd1 ecu conversion harness?
Is engine harness on my 1996 civic ek right now is obd2? Can i order obd2 tucked harness on amazon cos i want clean
