Default Replacing Si Coolant Gauge

So i bought a used EM1 Si cluster to replace my hodge-podge digital one. I bought it knowing the Coolant needle was missing, but i didnt think it'd be a big deal. am i wrong?
It looks like i can just throw a donor needle right in the little slot it belongs in? and at least try and put it in where it would normally sit when the car is cold and off?
or do i need to replace the entire unit behind the face? thanks for the tips!
