Default 4th Gen Axle Replacement. Can I do it myself??

Hey guys, I was ondering if I can do it myself and what tools do I need?? I see there is a big nut that holds the axle in place. Is that hard to take off??
Please let me know. Someone said they can hook me up with a deal of $450 JSUT TO CHANGE the axles. That is just the labor. He said that he is giving me a good deal too.
Thanks,
Andy

I know this is for an Accord, but the process is the same.

Hey man, I don't have a breaker bar or a ball joint seperator.
I was seriouslly thinking about a H22 swap. Is no the time to do it??? Man, I need to change my CV boots to pass inspection.
I am kinda technically inclined. Nothing special though. This is a second car so if it out of commission for a few days it is no big deal.
Let me know.
Thanks for all your hrlp.

whre do you live at? if you want, i can scan the info from my manual. a breaker bar is like 10-30 depending on which brand you get. a ball joint separator can be bought for 5-15 bucks also.

Yeah, i don't have a shop manual eiter.
I live in Maryland.
Thanks again,
Andy

You can rent a breaker bar and a ball joint puller from autozone. Then follow the instructions I linked you to.

I replaced both of my axles, but they cost ~$550 just for the axles!

Replacing the axles is not that hard, but man the intermediate shaft can be a royal PITA! I suggest you get yourself a ball joint seperator, I just use a pickle fork tool and i've never hurt the boot. If you have access to tools, then try it yourself. Air tools will make this job all the easier too.

If you want to drive up to philly, i'll do it in no time for lunch and beer.

follow that link that Wontbebeat posted, except you need a 36mm axle nut, not 32mm.. Do NOT pay 450$ to change axles, you can do it under an hour if your fast...

A bearing puller will usually work for the taper bolt too. For the intermediate shaft, I have a couple big square pry bars. With two of them, you can separate the joint evenly.
