Default 1995 accord LX, stretched shifter cable?

So my dads 95 accord wont start unless you play with the shifter, moving from park to neutral or push/roll the car a good distance. A friend of his whos a mechanic said the shifter cable go bad "streched" alot on the 94-97 accords. Accords arent really my specialty and didnt know how to word this in the search tool. Any help would be great, if more info is needed just ask, thanks.

Have you seen how big those cables are ? I can't imagine them having the capacity to stretch but I suppose I could be wrong. My initial guess is the neutral safety switch is worn. I haven't taken one of those apart on an accord, only a camry, and I was able to clean mines out on the camry and reapply dialectric grease and it was to go again. The oem grease, over time, gets old and causes the metal pieces to lose contact.

You can actually test it. There will be conductivity only in park and neutral across a couple pins and no conductivity when in any other gear. It should be located next to the shifter under the console I believe. You can probably get more information in searches or someone may be able to help out. I can't do all the work.

Thanks for the input, so At the moment the car turns on right a way so i cant check the nss for the readings when its probably working correctly. I did unplugged it (didnt start ofcourse) and plugged it back in and started up fine. But ill keep it in mind, any other suggestions? When it fails the car needs to be pushed a far distance or move the shifter up and down from different gears to get it to start.

If you got a junkyard nearby you can pull a used one for cheap.

I just want to ask, it doesn't crank at all, right ? Just want to be sure. Obviously if it cranks then the nss isn't the issue. It could possibly be the ignition switch too, but since you say jiggling the shifter fixes it, that sounds more likely as the issue.

It cranks but doesnt actually start until you push the car far enough or play with the shifter enough
