Default Removing 98 Honda Accord EX 4 cyl tran fill bolt?

Hey I was wondering if any of you have ran into an issue like this that has occurred to me. I was going to drain and fill the transmission fluid in my 98 honda accord ex 5 speed, and I went to the fill bolt which if I'm correct specifically calls for a 17mm wrench. I just bought new ratcheting wrenches by Gear Wrench and when I went to use the ratcheting side of the wrench it didn't want to fit over the bolt as if it was too small by a very small amount? Am I using the wrong size or what? I also tried fitting on a small 17mm socket and it was close to fitting it bit seemed slightly too small.

yep, should be a 17mm but you will want to use a 6 point as those love stripping and the last thing you want is to strip that bolt...also make sure you don't drain the fluid before you get that bolt off just in case it does strip and you need to drive it.

This is the type of wrench I have it's a 12 point wrench but in 17mm size, could that be why it's not fitting on there. It's really a small location to be maneuvering around in with a wrench on my car.

The 12 point should still fit. Something is wrong with it. Try another one..this time a 6 point one too.

Okay well i'll try to get all of this sorted in the morning, If a six point wrench end is required to remove the bolt it looks like i'll have to make a run for the hardware store in the morning to pick one up. I'll update the post as soon as I come back from the store tomorrow and check it out.

One thing if you cant loosen the bolt
Try tightening it first a bit which will cause the crush washer to collapse a bit and it will loosen up better

It's not required but it's best so that you don't strip that bolt. You do NOT want to strip that bolt. To get more torque you can use a box wrench with an open end on the other side of it. Then use another open end wrench against that one(just stick both open ends into each other and they will mate up) and you should be able to get enough torque to get it off. You want the first wrench on as straight as you can so you don't strip that bolt. Again, you do NOT want to strip that bolt. It appears it's already on it's way already.

Considering how rusted that bolt is, it would be wise to get another bolt from either the dealer or the junkyard. Most hondas will use the same bolt.

Okay guys and girls I thought I'd give you an update, I went to my local dealership and I told the guy behind the desk who was supposed to know what I was asking for. I told him the exact details and everything. Lone behold he ordered the wrong part so I have to go back to the dealership tomorrow to sort this mess. Instead of getting the fill bolt he ordered a drain bolt. Does anyone know the part # for the fill bolt?

Here is a write-up I did on this job with pictures on my '99 manual transmission.

https://honda-tech.com/forums/honda-accord-1990-2002-2/manual-transmission-fluid-change-info-6th-generation-2567087/

Be sure to read the responses too.

And spray it with some penetrating oil to help loosen it (liquid wrench). Give it time to soak in, an hour or two? (read the instructions on the penetrating oil)
