Can I use a 1990-91 clutch setup in my 1989 ZC dohc motor and tranny???
Hey guys, I have a dilema that I need your help in...but first of all I would like say THANKS to those who responded to my previously posted driveaxle question.
I just removed my transmission and found out that both my ZC dohc motor and tranny is a 1989 model. (20 spline and 200mm clutch disc). I bought them as a set back in 1999.
Here is my question:
1. Can I use the 1990-91 Exedy organic clutch set on my car since it also has a
20 spline? I know the clutch disc is bigger, about 212mm.
2. Are the 89 and 90-91 stock flywheel the same or do I need to swap out my 89
flywheel to a 90-91 flywheel to compensate for the change.
The reason for this madness is because after some research, I found out something interesting (www.coximport.com):
-the Exedy organic clutch set for 1989 has a holding capacity of 29% over stock. Part #08-803
-the Exedy organic clutch set for 1990-91 has a holding capacity of 69% over stock. Part #08-801
I'm currently running a 1990 hb si- dohc ZC with anywhere from 50-70 shot setup. I have no plans for any future mods.
I would like to get this car back on the road, so your prompt reply is greatly appreciated...Thanks!

Check that out. The reason for the greater holding capacity of the 90-91 clutch kits is, i am assuming here, due to the larger contact surface area. 88 has a 190 mm flywheel/clutch disk, 89 size is 200mm, and 90-91 is 212. Get a 90-91 flywheel.. i have an extra one if you want to buy it off me for cheap. It came out of my '91 std. hatch.

carsaregood,
Thank you for the website, it helped...
As for the offer for your flywheel, just remember my car is a 90 si hb and I still have my stock motor and tranny, therefore I 'll just use that flywheel...thanks anyways.
So by your reply, I assume that all I have to do is swap out the current 89 flywheel with the 90-91 flywheel which in return will allow me to use the 90-91 1.6L civic clutch set.

actually i think the spline count on the zc tranny if its an 89 is different so check your 90-91 clutch disk on the splines on the tranny if it doesnt fit you need to use the 89 one.
90crxzcgased,
As I recall, my 89 has 20 spline, and the 90-91 also has 20 spline. I think the 88 trannies are 21 spline.
So if the splines are correct, they should be interchangeble right?
I truly hope so, thanks...

irtep,
Only three items for this conversion:
-90-91 flywheel
-90-91 clutch
-90-91 pressure plate.
Thank you... that's the confirmation I've been waiting to hear.
