Default Volkswagen Coilover Bushing help

Hey guys sorry I know this is not a question concerning a Honda, but I am posting everywhere because nobody seems to know the answer to my dilemma. I installed coilovers on my 2001 MK4 GTI about a month ago and they were working completely fine. Now, a month later, when I turn the wheel I can hear the springs popping almost as if they're rotating. When I popped my hood I noticed that the top bushing was separated from the (mount?) If anyone can give me advice it would be amazingly appreciated. Thanks guys.

that seems to be the norm I've noticed on mk4's. Have you thought of just replacing the strut mounts with new ones?

that part right there is what they call a stop. you probably have had a bad strut top for quite a long time for the stop to get that bad.

Not uncommon for those strut tops to go bad. I need to do them on my girl's golf in fact.

The springs are not sprung correctly to the pitch of the strut body mounting point.

The mount is showing some above average wear, but in my experience, is not the source of your noise.

If the coil spring is not sprung against the upper mount plate and the strut casing, when you turn, the coil will turn with it, producing the noise. Sometimes a lower spring seat (rubber bushing) is provided in some kits, and is essential to eliminating noise during steering.

If you want to verify this is the case, if you can adjust the springs to increase the ride height, the noise should diminish as the load on the spring prevents it from rotating. If you cannot do this you have a set of springs that cannot retain enough tension to prevent turning.

(PS it is not abnormal for coil springs to migrate a small amount after a spring or strut replacement, they must find a resting place, if they cannot, they will produce noise)
