Default vtm-4 code 77

I have a 2003 honda pilot with about 112,000 miles. The check engine and vtm-4 lights came on about a week ago. Check engine is on all of the time. The VTM-4 light comes on after driving for 10 to 20 seconds and says on until the engine is turned off. It stays off until after I start driving it again.

Using a paper clip I shorted across the OBD and found that the VMT-4 light flashes 7 short followed by 7 fast flashes, resulting in code 77. Interestingly the check engine light and "D" (for Drive) lights did not return any codes.

Does anyone have any idea what code 77 is and what might be causing it? After much research all I have found is that when the check engine light is on and the vtm-4 light is on that it is most likely the EGR valve. However, after pulling code 77 for the VTM-4 and nothing for the engine I am left wondering if it is actually the EGR valve.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks much.

i'm getting the same code 77 for the VTM-4 on my Ridgeline and with exactly the same symptoms although I have a CEL for a P2251 code (o2 sensor)

Like you, i've found the same information dotted around the internet but this is the first i've actually seen about the EGR valve...

did you find any further info?

I have not found any answers for certain. I ordered a new EGR valve and it is expected to be delivered tomorrow. Once I install that this weekend I will let you know if that fixes the problem or not. If not my next option is to replace the oil temperature sensor in the rear differential.

I replaced the EGR valve on saturday. I then disconnected the negative terminal on the battery and let is sit for about 15 minutes. I started the engine and all lights stayed off. Since then we have driven it about 30 miles and the lights are still OFF. The drive is much smoother, not chugging when we are cruizing down the highway.

From my experience, it was a quick simple fix and the problems are gone.

I've recently had the Check Engine Light and VTM-4 lights illuminated on my 04 Pilot. VTM-4 code periodically goes off, then comes on some time later again.
Engine and transmission seem to be running fine. No rough running or chugging experienced.
Where did you purchase your EGR valve? What did it cost? Was it an easy fix? Any feedback and instructions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! Longtime Honda/Acura lover, but relative newby to the forum.

If it's the same as my 2006 Pilot, the procedure looks pretty simple:

I bought it online for about $60. The process is very simple; After removing the engine cover its just just two nuts and the wire harness that need to be removed. After that cleaning off the old gasket, then putting the new gasket on with the new evrg valve, followed by the two nuts. Once they were tight I put reconnected the wire harness.
