Default 88-89 cluster to 90-91 setup???

how do you wire up the dimmer switch? the 88-89 dimmer has three wires (red/blk, blk, and red) and the 90-91 dimmer has (red/wht, red/grn, red?). plugs are the same but when i plug it in and turn it on, fuse pops?

Why'd you have to wire the dimmer switch...when I moved the wires over to the SiR plugs, 88 dimmer switch worked the same...Since I have a new cluster cover I have 2 sets of dimmer and hazard switches...i merely transfered the plug to the other dimmer switch and it worked...left the hazard where it was, on the steering column. Here's another site if you want to check it out...http://www.geocities.com/twisted91ci...ap_diagram.htm and

hmmm. well mine is a crx dimmer in my civic. maybe the 90-91 crx dimmer is different from the 90-91 civic one. thats the only thing i can think of. btw, you can use the 90-91 hazard switch by just rewiring it. same colors. left out two illumination wires though (red, red/blk). and then i just removed the hazard switch from the combination switch (an easy two screws). now i just have to order a new top cover for the steering column to eliminate the hazard hole. thanks for the reply.

No prob...I didnt want to rewire the hazard just yet...being lazy I guess...although I may put a fuel pressure or oil pressure gauge on each side of the cluster hood so it will save me on rewiring it back. Anyway, this is really weird though...I know what you're saying about the different wires on the dimmer switch...mine worked immediately after just moving the plugs to the other switch...but the funny thing is, last night I was working on the cluster wires because I'm getting a code 17 (VSS) and I tried to link the speed sensor wire on the ECU to the VSS lead wire...to make a long story short, speedometer didnt work and lost cluster lights all together...then when I removed the connection I made, the new dimmer switch wouldnt work and I had to reuse the old switch. And the cluster lights will not come on unless it is plugged to the old switch too...hmmm...

EF_LSVtec,
same thing happened to me. first the new 90-91 dimmer worked then it didnt. and now it wont at all. check out this page http://students.washington.edu/markpaco/sircluster.html, read the first setence after the last pic. i guess he had the same problem.

SuperCivic,
first of all, congrats!! about the vss there are 3 wires. black = ground. yellow = constant 12v. and yellow/ with stripe (in my case white) = vss signal. i tapped that wire into pinout b16 (yell/red) on the ecu. wire from b16 comes from the cluster, giving the vss signal to the ecu. by tapping into it, my cluster and ecu both now get the vss signal. no biggie. for now i tapped into the radio constant power and the radio ground for the vss's ground and power. i gotta get back in there and fix that.

i figured it out. you have two options.

1. The Proper Way - get a control box out of a 90-91 car. while your at the junkyard get the plug with some inches of wire with it. and the get the 90-91 dimmer plug and wires too, the colored wires make it much easier. then you just wire it up. easy once you have all the parts. here is the diragram and box.
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/we...ZmQzMXk1NDE%3D
basically to use the 90-91 switch you have to have the control box. the 88-89 switch has the control box intergrated into the switch. and the 90-91, being so small, has to have a seperate control box to keep all the parts out of the small switch.

2. The Cheese Ball Way - pull the plug from the dimmer switch. do not plug it in, leave it out. instead tap the black wire to the red wire. leave the red/blk wire alone. this will make the dashboard lights turn on at full brightness. you will have no control over the brightness, but it works and its an easy solution.
