What transmission problems are you referring to? As for the rest that's all dependent on what your local smog laws are. I'm willing to bet a D16A6 is a safe bet for you.

Any 88-00 Civic D-Series engine will bolt up to your existing transmission. If you want the easiest switch up for a transmission get an 88-91 Si or DX(LX) manual transmission and it will all bolt up like stock (and switching from that HF transmission will be a night and day difference though I'd personally hold onto that HF transmission).

Si trans would be a great upgrade for you, and the engine depends on what you want. Are you planning on doing MPFI and OBD1 conversion both?

You can google the specifics for this.

The quick version is:

91 and older = Pre OBD (OBD0)
92-95 = OBD1
96 and newer = OBD2

*There's a split between OBD2, happened around 98-99 and goes from OBD2A to OBD2B.

What this means for you when you do swaps is you have some different connectors and some different sensors that vary between OBD versions.

You have to convert the wiring to MPFI if not already setup for 4-injectors, then use OBD0-1 harness and use OBD1 ECU. The OBD2 engine and sensors work with OBD1. Contact me through my site and I can help you out.

The transmission you want to match to the chassis, use the si cable trans it will bolt up to the d16.

His HF is already MPFI.

Look, it'ts really simple.
All D16's bolt to your engine bay using ALL the engine brackets and mounts that are right now holding your engine. As long as you use a D series cable actuated transmission, you are fine, it will bolt on and work the same.

You need to decide what engine you are going to use.
The simplest would be a D16A6. you just need the CRX Si ECU are you are good to go. No convertion harnesses needed, you can use the harness you have right now. Even the HF distributor works with the Si engine.

Until you decide on the engine, it's hard to tell you what to do since the engine/ECU/Distributor (VTEC or non VTEC) combinations are many

So you want a D16Y7 engine. That is an OBd2 engine. You will need an Obd0 to OBD1 ecu conversion harness. A non VTEC OBD1 ECU. 4 Wire O2 sensor. The OBD2 distributor will work, but you will have to rewire the plug. Also if you are using the D16Y7 alternator you will have to rewire that as well. Use the Y7 harness as a source for the plugs you will need . To make matters simpler, I would use a D16A6 intake manifold and throttle body.

Now. If you really, and I mean really want to make things simpler and you don't need high performance, then just swap the D15 Hf long block with the D16y7 long block.
Reuse EVERYTHING that the D15 had on the Y7 and it becomes a one day swap and you are up and running in no time.

good luck with the swap. The zc swap shouldent be too difficult but. i know with obd1 when you buy the ecu harness it comes with extra wires you run to the engine bay for new sensors on the engine that you didnt have before. i would search around for a obd0 to obd2a or obd2b ecu harness, i looked but i couldent find anything. that would be the cleanest way. i also used 2 ebay $20ish ecu harnesses and never had a problem so no reason to fork out alot for one.
