I have an '01 Accord with 90,000 miles on it. Yesterday I had problems where the engine would turn over, then it would sputter and cut off within 10 seconds. It's in the shop and they are cleaning out the fuel injector or something. I don't want to have any problems in the near future, so I inquired as to scheduled maintenance, and they recommended timing belt maintenance at 105,000 miles or 10 years. Do I need this or can I possibly get by for another couple years until it's time for a new car? I just spent $500 on the fuel injector and some other maintenance, so I hate to put another $750 on the timing belt work if I don't have to.

 

simple answer, timing belt changes are there for a reason,
you may can get away without a change, but its not very smart
because when your timing belt snaps , its over.

its your decision but as a mechanic i have to say change it !

 

The timing belt is the most critical of all belts on the car. It is your lifeline. If it breaks then you will bend valves and the very least. At 12 years and 90,000 miles you should really look into replacing the belt.

 

Damn those are some steep prices....

But yes, get the belt done. But I would look to take it elsewhere...

 

You need to find a new shop!!! $500 for injector cleaning and $750 for a TB change? JEEZUS!!

 

$150 more will be cheaper than $ 750 more and it wont eat up your new car funds. Personally at 70 k whether it needs it or not all timing components and waterpump are replaced.
