Tell it to me straight doctor... How long do I have left..?
Ok, so less than a week after purchasing my 88 CRX I find that the bottom of the trunk area is completely rusted out! It started out as a small hole which I then probed with my finger (giggity) and now there is a baseball sized chunk missing from my the well where the spare used to sit. There's no rust anywhere else on the car and the 'frame' part of the chassis (it's one peice) has no rust on it so structurally I should be good. Other than scrapping the entire car my first thought was to re shell it but, I"m a little strapped for cash at the moment so that's out of the question. Second thought was to find a wrecked crx at a junkyard and salvage the rear portion of the car but, that seems like a lot of running around finding one that doesn't have the exact same rust. So I was thinking I could cut out the bottom and weld in some diamond plate, 'rhino-line' it over, and it should be good to go until I can find and afford a clean shell. Not, doing anything is not really an option because I really don't want it to spread to the subframe and vital parts of the car's structure. I feel like an idiot because I traded my 03 Accord for this car (the tranny was slipping and I was afraid it might die and I wouldn't be financially able to immediately get it back on the road . For the price of one rebuilt accord tranny I could get a rebuilt d15 engine and tranny (both with warranties) The drive train is solid which is why I bought it, old civics die hard so I figured it'd be the perfect college car. (And, surprisingly I actually like how the car looks)
Here's the pics, let me know if you have any suggestions or if you've done rust repair on a car and have any advice to offer me. Or just feel free to tell me how dumb I am lol.
I'll post some pics as soon as I can figure out how to.
