OBDI scanner or OBDII to OBDI adapter?
Hello, both of my civics are 5th gen OBDI cars. I can get a really nice bluetooth OBDII scanner and Torque for Android for around 40 bucks USD. I was wondering if anyone knew off hand if just getting an OBDII to OBDI adapter would work or do I need to get a specific OBDI Honda scanner?
I know you can get the codes by counting the blinks and don't have to have a scanner, but I'm thinking I should get an OBDII scanner just to have on hand anyway and thought it might be nice to utilize it on my OBDI cars if that is even possible.

I was afraid of that. Looks like a Honda Interface Module is needed with the HDS software.
@B_Swapped93 The one I would get is pretty good and not some China knock off. Guy I work with has it and pointed me at the one he got. It's made in USA and works really well on OBDII and with Torque he can do resets, log with GPS and monitor and many other things beyond just pulling codes. It's a pretty nice setup over all and easy to use.
I was hoping it would be backwards compatable for the Automatic EG civic I have. But I'm guessing I'd need a whole nother interface for the Auto Tranny.
Pros and cons to a OBDI cars.
Thanks for the replies.

it works, but it don't look that pretty , yeah.
The sales market for such a thing is so very small, it would really be just a group hobby thing to maybe get a couple dozen fabricated and tested and put in a little prettier box. The means to do such a thing is all there, it is all released under open-source, schematics, code, description of how its supposed to work, so if somebody wanted to they could...

Maybe a compiled version and a how to on the hardware build with parts list?
I agree the market for it isn't really there... OBDI is a dying beast, not too many left on the roads anymore, and this is Honda specific, probably one of the larger selections left for OBDI.
well, it's all the doc/HonOBDapt.doc. the first page or so goes over the overall scheme and the parts. Schem.JPG is pretty much all there is to say about the hardware really. You can wire it up with anything handy. I guess one thing that is not obvious to the unfamiliar is that for the Arduino setup, you just have to get the Arduino plugged into your USB port, and then use the regular Arduino environment to open the source file and compile and upload it. Its a no brainer, just need the Arduino IDE.

Consider the OBD II standard. Actually there are five protocols allowed by the standard. Each protocol has to be tested for by the universal scanner and used if it responds. Guess what the five protocols are? Variations on the protocols used by dominant manufacturers at the time of the creation of the 'standard'.
Do you have a check engine light? The 1.4 UK models don't have the same port as US. Follow this guide for yours:
