trans rebuild kit?
transmissions is about the only thing on a honda i cant do. looking to get my hands dirty and learn how to do this crap.
i have a 4spd STD trans that makes a weird pop when you first start to accelerate but otherwise works with no grinds or pop outs. what would need to be replaced to fix this?
i also have a SI 5spd that just broke hitting 2nd at the drag strip, shifter locked and wont move but the wheels roll free, is it fixable or pretty much done for? fluid started pouring out at the shaft behind the clutch on the 5spd.
also have another 5spd si that has been sitting in the bweather (free) could it be salvageable?
and does anyone know how big a difference a 94 LS tranny would be? i look to have a pro fix it as i actually need it but depending how hard the D sereies go i might try it on my own.

It is all pretty complicated from an engineering stand point. I have seen many first timers have great success though. As long as you take your time and figure out what you are doing, you should be fine. I'm not sure what the question was. How to fix your trans? Find the portion that is broke and replace it. Seems like a tooth or something is ground down too much. D-series trans should be a dime a dozen though, why not just find one that doesn't pop?
oh i did, i just want to learn how to do these transmissions, the two i have are both spares laying in the back yard. car has a good one in it. and ive heard they are alike to a B series which i also want to get into.
yea, my question was what do you think the pop could be, input shaft bearing, syncro ect. though im pretty sure its not a syncro. when i was removing the trans you could sometimes hear it turning the wheels by hand, like their was play between the gears somehow. some friends said they think it was a bear, only ask because i dont want to replace the gears themselves if its a bearing problem.

Rebuilding a transmission is actually quite a bit more simple if you don't over think it. Hardest thing for me (and still is) is just separating the case halves. After that there's a a few 10mm bolts inside, one hex bolt (forget the size, maybe 8?), and like a 30mm nut on one of the shafts. All else just lifts out. Then just be smart about how you remove/separate each gear. Only thing left after replacing your wear and tear items is measuring a couple clearances to make sure you have the right shim(s).

Here is a great write-up on a B-series

D series isn't much different.
It's GREAT to have a Helms or Honda service manual for this. At the least to get all the proper torque specs. More importantly is the process. There is a bolt that will make you cry if you don't install it in the right order of assembly. The "I hate you so much right now" interlock bolt. I've put 2 transmissions together (thinking I had it down packed from having done a few before using the book) and had put that stupid bolt in at the wrong time.
Lock the countershaft THEN install interlock bolt.
Your trans will engage 2 gears at the same time - engine stalls - car does not move - and inside end up looking like this (borrowed pic, but it's exactly what happened to me)

4drEF, now where did you get that pic from? LOL!
skill178, I would need more info on the 4 speed tranny. The 5 speed tranny that you broke is likely a broken 1-2 shifter fork which wiped out the synchro and spring ring locking the tranny in second gear. Drove home 20 miles like that....

5 speed from the strip is done. pulled my free 5spd into the garage and disassembled her, she has some surface rust on the diff plate but not on the gears or teeth, and also the 1-5 gears have a few small spots of surface rush in between the teeth, think there would be any harm in re using the gears as long as they are cleaned up? alot seems to actually come off very easy.
havent touched the 4 speed untill i get the 5 back together but the noise it made was a kinda loud pop like somthing was being slammed into somthing else but after looking in this trans i dont see how anything could move and hit somthing else without grinding or whining aswell, starting to think it might have been somthing in the front end of the car.
case looks alot worse then it was, everything wiped right out except in the clutch bell housing. it safe to use water on the transmission (inside and out) since the gear sets and diff are all out, still have the 2 bearings in this half and 1 in the other case half.

i take it your are a transmission guru mista bone? lol,
any idea what would make a slight grinding noise when accelerating in second gear (LS) trans? only in 2nd and only when accelerating and also only about 30% of the time, maybe less
every time i try to record the sound it dont make the sound -.-
have been told that it might be the needle bearing but no offence to that guy im still not sold
