Accord 96 EX 4 cylinder : oil under distributor
Hi,
I just notice some oil under the distributor of my Accord 1996 EX 4 cyclinder.
I already planned to changed my valve cover gasket and spark plug tube seals since I have some oil in the spark plug tube.
But I just notice the oil under the distributor
Here are some pics , Where does the oil come from ? What gasket I need to change ???
Thanks

I'm no expert, but with that much build up I would guess it's the distributor seal. There is a very detailed write up on how to replace it and it's cheap too.

what a mess, and FYI that has been leaking for a few years. Anyway don't forget to replace the O-ring around the notch. Also when dismantling a dist. keep in mind that it is an electrical component, and by taking it apart you run the risk of it failing. If it fails your car will not start, so make sure you have a back up plan, and make sure it is done right the first time..
Get new cap and rotor while you're at it, the inside of that dist. /cap is contaminated with oil.

Hi,
How can you known it has been leaking for years ?
So you said it is better to change the whole rotor instead of just changing the seals inside it ?
Changing the seals is way cheaper, I think around 20-30$ instead of the rotor which cost 150$. Just gessing .
Thanks
Look at all the grime and oil build up, a fresh leak will not have time to acquire that mess you posted.
I meant the rotor inside the dist. (less than $15)

I would think the internal would be cheaper from this site. If you do decide to get it from there email the guy, and give him the correct engine code, because the seal inside the Dist. from the f22b2 and f22b1 engine are different.

Got to be the O ring ...if you do decide to change the rotor its gonna be a pita to slide off I put a tab of oil around it and gently chissled it off that's the easiest way

The problem is that there aren't "seals" inside the distributor. There's exactly one seal. However it may not even be leaking. Without question the oring that goes around the shaft that meets the camshaft is leaking.
Without you opening up the cap and seeing if there is oil inside the distributor would you know if the actual seal inside is bad or not. However it would appear to be. Also, if that is oil coming from the inside there is a chance that that oil has already started to damage the ignitor and/or sensors inside. Depending on if there is oil inside the distributor would determine if it might be best to just get another distributor just to be on the safe side.
Hi,
I changed th O-ring of the distributor. I was stressed for my first work on my car but it finally went well.
I removed the cap and no oil inside so the internal shaft seal is not leaking so I didn't changed it , same thing for the rotor the rotor, I didnt changed it.
Thanks for your input !
