There is a wire cable that attaches to the heater-A/C control unit from behind. It goes from the control unit through the fire wall and attaches to a valve in the heater core inlet hose in the engine bay. You can check the connection in the engine bay easy enough. It is located below the intake manifold near the fire wall. The connection on the control unit itself is a bit harder to get at. You have to remove it from the dash.

Most likely just the ****, the cables and valves can fail but are far more durable than the plastic **** which has surely turned brittle. Wiggle the **** while pulling toward you, once off check to see if it is cracked in any way or if the metal "D" retainer has stayed attached to the heater controls ( this is the part that affixes the **** to the controls). If you need to replace it they're pretty cheap at autozone and look fairly refreshed when you replace the pair http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...2_179467_2826_
