Icon2 Clutch Master Cylinder quick question

If you have the CMC disconnected from the slave cylinder and the exit port on the CMC is open will it leak fluid or is supposed to leak fluid? I have it set up on my work bench trying to troubleshoot a problem. I have the reservoir hooked to the CMC and when I poured fluid into the reservoir it bubbled and fluid started to pour out of the CMC port that would lead to the slave cylinder. Is it bypassing internally on the CMC or is it supposed to do that? The piston was not depressed, it would be as if it were just sitting bolted up in a car and nothing touching it. I do not have another good CMC accessible that I could test this out with.

Reason I am asking is because today I went to bleed the clutch in my EF that I did a hydro conversion on. After a couple hours of not being able to get to the clutch to bleed I believe I either have one of a few problems. The reservoir is not up high enough to feed fluid to the CMC, the CMC is bad, or the slave cylinder is bad. Thats all I can come up with. There are no visible leaks and at no point could I get any pressure to build in the system. I could only get a few drops of fluid out of the slave cylinder when attempting to bleed the system of air. It is not that complicated of a system obviously, but it kicked my butt today.

Seems that I stumped another very knowledgable individual with this question too. He just like me has never poured fluid into the CMC with the pressure line disconnected from the slave cylinder. So, he doesn't know for sure if fluid will pour out of the pressure port with out the pedal being depressed. Which is exactly what mine did yesterday when I was troubleshooting.

I sourced another CMC today and tested it out to see if it acted just like the CMC I have and it does. With the line disconnected that leads to the slave cylinder, if the reservoir has fluid in it, it will leak out of the pressure port with out having to do anything to the CMC.

Now, either I did not have the reservoir up high enough to feed the CMC ample amount of fluid or I have another problem. We shall see what the deal is.

Thanks for the help guys.

A bit late, but yes the fluid will leak out with the line disconnected.

Sometimes they're just miserable to bleed. You can always to gravity bleed it. Just put fluid in the reservoir, crack the bleeder and walk away for 10 or 20 minutes and there should be fluid coming out of the bleeder.

I may try to do that. I think that my problem may lie with how I had the reservoir mounted. Since I converted my EF to a hydro clutch setup I had a friend who had done it before weld up a bracket to my pedal assembly. It worked fine in his car, so it was cheap and I let him hook mine up. On mine I have the CMC mounted upside down so under the dash area, which works and should be fine, but I am not sure I had the reservoir up high enough that the fluid was forcing itself into the CMC. I got myself a couple more fluid reservoirs today that are different sizes and I am going to see if they will work any better and I can mount them in an area to get it high enough for the CMC. Hopefully that solves the problem.

Thanks for the reply anyways.....

Having it mounted upside down is probably a lot of your problem.

Well, maybe part of the problem, but tonight I got it to work. I put in a different CMC and reservoir tonight and gave it another shot. I bled it and the clutch is actually working now. I guess the first time around I was not able to get enough fluid to the CMC, which is weird because I had the reservoir mounted even higher up. Now I have another problem on my hands. The pedal assembly especially on the clutch end of it flexing when I push the pedal. I have a dual disc clutch in the car and I am definitely going to need some bracing on the pedal assembly or else I am going to have another problem. I will assess that in the days to come.
