I have a 92 honda civic hatchback si. my battery light came up on the cluster yesterday so I figure it would be the alternator. I pull out the multimeter check for voltage, battery reads 12v with the car off & with the car on it should be holding charge at 14v but it didnt, it stay at 12v. I change the alternator and check for voltage with the car on its at 14v so everything running fine. No more battery light come up on the cluster but when i turn it off the battery light comes on and turns off right away? Whats the problem can that be? Can it be a defective alternator?

when the car is on and running, the battery light doesn't come on anymore. but when you turn it off to ignition on to off and pull the key out. the battery light flickers on n off right away.

 

Might be an ignition switch issue.

 

when i was driving the car today battery light came and it was flickering like crazy so i pull over it stop. but now when i put the key on ignition on the battery light doesnt show on the cluster no more. so i thought the bulb went out. but when i turn the key to off position i see the battery light flicker on and off

 

help a buddy out!

 

swap a new alternator. and it still does the same thing.

 

The best strategy is to continue to replace parts until the problem is fixed. Avoid doing any diagnostic testing as long as possible, or until money runs out.

 

alternator was under warranty. i thought it was a defective alternator. do you have any suggestion where i should check?

 

Haha...no, none whatsoever. This is my first post in this thread.

 

First off, check that all your grounds at/near the battery/alternator are clean and tight (to factory spec). secondly, check that your alternator belt is tensioned properly. thirdly, just for ***** and giggles, clear your ecu of any persistent stored codes. then see where you are with the problem.

 

sigh... im just driving it the way is it. so far no problem of it shutting off or dieing. everything reads to spec

 

Have a shop diagnose it for you then fix it yourself if you can.

 

At ~$90 an hour for labor, that sounds like a bad idea. Since the issue is with the key off, sounds like an ignition switch issue to me.
