Default Timing and Fuel Problems on 99 Accord w/ F-Max kit

Alright.. this car is killing me. I cannot figure out for the life of me what is the problem with this car. If you're not familiar with the f-max kit here is the site: http://www.f-max.com . Alright.. first of all I have a problem with timing. Just listening to the car you can tell its skipping a beat. So there is the igntion or cam timing .. right? the adjustable cam gear is adjusted to 0 ... actually -.25. I just replaced the plugs ... denso iridiums with 32 gap according to F-Max. I dont know what to do with that MSD boost retard box... I just keep it at 0. I'm returning that and splitting hte difference with f-max for the MSD 6L i think its called.. also theyre sending me a new Missing Link b/c it seems to be not functioning right.. the check engine light is still on and i think its having troubling reading hte new fuel map sensor sent iwth the kit... Also the car is burning so rich there is black smoke everywhere... but the idle is messed up .. it idles at like 500 rpms which is not enough.. b/c it keeps dyin on me as i down shift b/c im not hittin the gas... any help on this set up would be appreciated.. anything you can add would be helpful. .thanx

Hi JP

I think I had the same exact problem you had a while back. Are you using the MF2? If so, I strongly recommend that you get it tuned or get rid of it all together and go for a stand alone with larger injectors. Reason being, these thing tend to just dump fuel into the #4 cylinder, and by the time the AF mixture reaches the #1 cylinder, its leaned out...so the AF mixture is really inconsistent through the four cylinders. Second thing I'd do is check the #4 spark plug..its probably caked with carbon whereas the others look alright. This is probably causing you engine to misfire and have an irratic idle. (nothing to do with timing)

Finally, when you get your fuel situation sorted, try driving around and listen carefully for detonation...if you hear even the slightist pinging sound, start retarding the timing a bit ( I'm not an expert on timing, so I don't know how much you'll need to retard it.

Strong advice: I would save up for a stand alone -assuming that you don't have one now (seriously)...its a good investment in the longevity of your engine...BUT if you want to keep the MF2, at THE very least get a active knock sensor and retarding device like the J&S Safeguard...it'll save you from timing guess work.

Thanks for that info so far. Yea im working with the MF2 but I'm also installin the Fields VTEC/ Fuel Controller. We took apart the MF2 and i had a pro change some of the settings inside and it seems to be running better. What happened is that the car is running so rich that the gas was washing hte oil out of the cylinders. My oil reeks of gas. So since the guy told me while we're tuning ill be changing my oil quite often.. im just running conventional for now and then ill go back to synthetic... also should i invest in something like Hondata or will the stuff mentioned above be enough?
