how do I determine which tranny I have
2001 Civic EX. I am guessing BMXA or SLXA. CVT is not in this car. Manual is too general. Is there a site to enter the VIN and get some details?
The service manual isn't general at all. If you have the sedan a serial number beginning with 5 is an American made BMXA and a serial beginning with 1 is a Japanese made SLXA. If you have the coupe a serial beginning with 5 indicates a BMXA and a serial beginning with 1 is a CVT. That's for the US market, not Canada, which is a little different.

Thanks for the reply...I should have been more specific. THE OWNERS MANUAL is very, very general, designed for people that can't change a tire. I do not have a Service Manual. But your info should do the trick. Did you mean VIN # of the car or serial # of the Trans?
I can barely read a barcoded sticker on the trans. It does have a BMXA #### which I guess is the $64,000 answer. Sticker is very dirty and appears to have a serial # too. The "B" was what I was after.
