Default Power Steering Hose Disaster

I had a pin hole in a power steering hose. Thought it would be easy to replace, but now I am stuck with an old hose that won't come off and no going back.

The fitting that goes into the steering gear is hopelessly stripped. (Not the threads, but I can't get a wrench to grab on it.) The tubing is now cut off at the fitting. At this point I have tried vice grips and a small pipe wrench, but still can't get it to loosen. The rack is still installed, my last hope is to pull the whole thing.

Any recommendations or special tools that may get it?

You'll probably have to remove the entire rack. Remove the fitting then put everything back in. Good times.

You can cut the line flush too the fitting and try an extractor. Id try it at least before removing the rack. Pb the **** out of it and hammer the extractor on and tug away.

Worse comes to worse remove the rack and drill the fitting out and re-thread if needed

I hadn't thought of an extractor. That's definitely worth a shot before pulling the rack. Thanks.

If you can get that done in that small space more power to you. I would already have undone it enough to at least flip it over.

I had to replace my rack when I bought my Civic. I had to cut the line off. The bitch was the only place that didn't have to order it with at least a 4 day wait was NAPA and it cost me $100 to replace.

If the line is already cut off anyway, cut it flush with the tube nut/flare nut and use an extractor like so:

No prob man, i use them frequently as i tend too turn little issues into big ones as well. I have had this problem before and an extractor with a 2 to 3 foot extension helps alot too.

Thanks for the help! I got it without pulling the rack off.

...and I'm sure I'll be using my new extractor set again soon. (Advance Auto Parts $26.00)

Those extractors sets are one of the handiest things to have around. They can take something that would otherwise ruin your day and make it a non-issue.

I have extractor wrenches, come in handy in tight spaces.
