Icon2 looking for the right civic.... suggestions?

Recently, my brother has been teaching me how to drive his 5 speed. I own a 1994 honda accord EX with an automatic trans and I am now searching for a manual trans vehicle to become more proficient. I am leaning towards a 5th gen Civic coupe preferably with a VTEC motor (not sure if it would be like the "EVTEC" that I have in my accord). I say a coupe because they are lighter, though I'm not really a fan of the Hatch style. At one point I was considering a manual swap for the Accord; I would go the H22 route but it would probably be more expensive. I am familiar with Accord motors/body styles but have not dived into the realm of civics yet. For this criteria, what would yall recommend? Possibly even something from 6 gen civics? It would be a Daily driver, what sort of DD civic setups do yall run?

Thank you for any replies!

research the FAQ in this section. Establish a goal for the new car. Establish a budget. Base your purchase on that.

The 5th 6th and 7th gen civics are all very similar. The VTEC E(economy) is available in each gen. but not available in V6. Other than that it's a matter of budget and preference.

Would all USDM VTEC motors throughout 5th, 6th, and 7th gens be VTEC E then? And the budget would be like 2-3k, just looking for a USDM (dont think I can afford the JDM motors) 5spd VTEC coupe I could later possibly start to modify starting with bolt-ons, and moving into internals. Being my DD, and in California, I cant consider turbo's, but end goal would be a fun, sporty DD that I could master manual transmission with.

Looking to stay N/A with the motor

If you are looking for sporty you don't want the E variant. The E is for VTECs that are tuned for economy not performance. The standard 6th gen VTEC was available in the SOHC EX (EJ8) and DOHC Si (EM1). I believe that is the same in the 5th gen (EJ1) not sure about the 7th gen.

7th Gen is nothing like 5th or 6th. different suspension and different motors.

You really need to read the FAQ, why are you interested in VTEC-E? USDM and JDM motors are the same price usually.

Being in California I would look into either a 5th or 6th gen coupe, and then doing a GSR swap and getting it BAR'd. That would be quite a sporty DD. You will need to research how to BAR a swap and everything you will need.

Cosmetically they are very similar it depends on what the priority is.

At all costs, never refer to them as EGs or EKs within North America or doctorake's OCDs will reach critical mass.

I'll do some more research on the EJ1, that sounds like what I looking for. Sorry the misunderstanding all, I should clarify I am trying to avoid VTEC E motors, and if an Si isn't that much more expensive I just might take that route as well.

Or an EJ8

You all have been very helpful!

Just be careful of the Si's you look at. They are very prone have been flogged hard and put away wet and/or modified with various levels of competency.... Or stolen.

CarFax is your friend but doesn't have the whole story. My DX had a clean Carfax but I have since found collision damage that wasn't divulged at purchase.

BTW I don't mean to highjack the thread I'm just messin' with doctorake
