88 civic starter dead
when I turn the key it just will click, but sometimes will turn. my guess is the starter, just curious if anyone can give me some info on replacing it aprox. cost, dificulty level and standard hour time thanks in advance!

after that, a starter goes for like 90 bucks (someone please correct me)
dificulty level its about 3 from 1-10.. maybe like 4 for you
it might take me 15 min to change ... and 45 min to you....
just loose 1 nut, pull one plug, take 2 14mm screws, and move the starter out.... thats it...

thanks alot, where exactly is the starter located?
look close to the battery on top of the tranny... its under the distribuitor... u can miss it(if u know what a starter look like)
its right under the intake manifold on the passenger side, try this 1st...take like a pipe and hold it to the started, then hit it the pipe with a hammer a couple of times, see if your car starts then...
Before you go out and buy yourself a brand new starter, let me give you some advice on the starter. If the 88 Civic's Starting Circuit is anything close to being the same as the 96 Civic's, I can give you some info on your problem..
Before I begin, I want to let you know that you can go and replace the starter if you to. It's really up to you.. But what I'm trying to do is show you how to systematically test your starter.
First of all, you said that when you turn the key it goes click.. That means that your Starter Solenoid is working. Meaning that the Pull In and Hold In Coils work. But that doesn't mean that you're getting enough power to the starter. So what you're suppose to check next is the battery.. But since it's an 88 Civic, I can assume that there's some starter problems.
Assuming that your battery is fully charged and all.. Since you're planning on swapping out your starter, you might as well open it up and see if you can replace any of the worn parts.. Before doing so, check the connections at the starter and make sure that they're all clean.
Worn parts that you'll probably find are the Brushes on the Commutator. They tend to wear out after awhile. This will cause your starter not to crank over the engine..
Just thought I'd let you know.. I'm just trying to save you some money if possible.. But if you want to know more about how to check starters, look in the Integra Forum.. I pretty much wrote an essay about it.. Look under "Car won't Start".. Good Luck..
