Custom Car turbo set up
Ok before i get hammered... yes I spent days looking through dynos and looked at a ton of post but noting really fits my application
so I am looking for some help. O save some time... i am an engineer with a good amount of turbo actuator design (so I can read compressor maps)
I need turbo suggestions for a quick spool (2500k reasonable?) for road race / autocross application and somewhere about 300hp and as much torque as possible. TThe car will weigh ~1200-1500lbs so I dont need a ton of power... for now.
I am in the "engine stage" of my car build so in am looking for suggestions on the following too. Injector size (need a new fuel rail?) and ECU
Right now I plan on running a walbro 255 inline pump (only) and adjustable FPR
Engine Specs
Block: stock
Exhaust: SPfab Log Manifold, custom 4 bolt or vband down pipe, tial 38mm with T3 flange
Top end:
head milled .025" (slight bump in compression)
b16 stock cams
AEM adjustable cam gears
Omni dual valve springs (should be good to 10k rpm, although there is no point in revving that high with these cams/internals)
Omni titanium retainers
Omni Flathead inconel valves (also a slight bump in compression)

I thought the Super 60 was too big for what you want. I'd stay as small as possible to get the spool time you want. The super 60 will overshoot 300. The GT28RS is what I'd say would fit your application.

Yea that GT28RS is gonna be a pretty penny. Thats what ball bearings normally do to the price. You can get a nice journal bearing turbo but it wouldnt be as responsive.
I guess the T3 Super 60 is rated lower than I originally thought. It does fit your goals pretty nicely.
Yeah, i want to stay in the $800 range so a t3/t4 50 trim is probably going to be the ticket. Not sure how altitude will affect spool up though.

gt28rs is where its at for your goals...expensive but you want super fast spool...also keep your eyes pealed you may be able to find one used...or its smaller version of the gt28's that came on the greddy kits, dsm's, sr20's, etc... hell you might be able to find a used b-series greddy kit that would work nice, but you would be pushing it to get 275 to the wheels but it would spool fast.
the t28 off the Nissan gti-r pulsars flow enough to hit 300to the wheels and can be found usually under 400

Amazing build man. Id say go with the GT28RS. I know its more than you want to spend but Garrett makes some amazing ball bearing turbo's you def wont be disappointed. Other options like others have said is a stock Evo8/9 turbo. This could be an amazing turbo for you also. Quick spool and some room to add more power later. Im pretty much maxing my stock evo 8 turbo out at 375hp but I also have cams and some other stuff done to the car.
It all depends upon the budget. But these respond nicer than even the T3 Super 60 on the B16 with that camshaft.
There are some great choices out here. GT2871R,GTX2863R,GTX2867R Or my favorite the "Rally Potato" GTX2860R. Even the GT2860RS is good, but for that weight, the GTX2860R is even nicer.

A good friend of mine had a MAKO using EJ20 JDM engine. Wonderful stuff that was on the track.. Until he killed the turbo due to oil coking from lack of cooling in-between sessions. and those Super 60s don't come water cooled. Which is what you'll need for durability.

t28 BB turbo would be your best bet most likely, but if you're on a budget you'd be better with the super 60 t3 (which as I said before is NOT a t3/t4). as for whether you'd want a .63 or a .48 turbine housing, that depends where you want full boost to start. the .63 will have you above 1psi around 2k rpms and around 8psi at around 3500-3700. the .48 housing will have you above 1psi pretty much just off idle, and at around 8psi around 2k rpms. I never suggest running a setup that'll spool that low though as it majorly lugs the motor and it can become extremely prone to knock even on a decent tune, as the pistons are simply travelling entirely too slow for the burn rate at that high of a load
for you guys' viewing pleasure, pictured below is a super 60 t3 and a super 60-1 disco potato t3/t4. you can plainly see the differences.

also, the super 60 t3 came in two versions of exhaust housings in both .48 and .63: some had a standard flange like in the above picture and used a bolt-on internal wg adapter plate (I think I have a brand new one lying around somewhere if anyone wants to buy it), and others came with a solid housing with the internal wg built into it
evo8/9 16g turbo, pretty darn durable, quick spool, super compact (dp, internal wg), $200-300ish in good condition.

Then stick with the T3 Super 60. Won't get anything better on an internal actuator for that price. Me, I tend to spend a little more on turbocharger for longevity and durability. Especially with what you're running here.
