Default ZC worth the questioning?

I recently picked up '89 civic dx hatch with a DOHC ZC in it. Here comes the headaches.

The motor needed some love (timing belt had a good gash in it, valve cover leaking... nothing too crazy, regular maintenance). Headed to my local automotive store to pick up the parts and found out just how confused I could make them. The first individual I talked to, asked me what parts I needed and then did the normal "and what vehicle is this for?" so with a big sigh for the on coming battle that I knew was about to ensue, I told him an '89 civic dx......but its not the stock motor. It has the 1.6 DOHC ZC in it. I'm pretty sure I watched his brain implode.

His solution was to go look at my car and take a look for him self, which is their way of telling you that you have no idea of what you are talking about. He takes a look and mumbles some stuff out loud to him self and then nods his head like he knew what I was talking about from the get go, and headed back into the store. He mashes away at his keyboard and eventually looks at me and asks if I could do some research and find out what the OEM part numbers are and he would be able to find them for me.

My question comes down to, Should I just keep on hand one of the many parts list that are on a few of the threads here, or is there an easy way of avoiding the look of despair that I encountered that day? Should I leave the ZC in it, or switch to something a little more commonly known? (I thought they were pretty known). I've never had a ZC setup which was one of the reasons the car called out to me, I like to learn about new setups (new to me).

Any input is greatly appreciated or any of your past experiences with obtaining parts. (easiest way or ways to avoid )

Alot of ZC info on here just need to dig a bit.

Pretty much a DOHC ZC is a sohc Si engine + Prelude engine+ Teg engine, all mixed in one. All the parts are available just need to get them from other models

**Transmission quirks**
88 Transmissions are the only ones that are 21 splined
That means you must use a 88 ONLY clutch kit.
89-91 Transmissions are all 20 spline.

Cool, thank you. Best bet sounds to be just holding on to the parts list and continually telling the individuals that this really is the part I want.

Pretty much. DOHC ZC is a jap spec engine so nobody would know the parts or the engine

Good luck!

if you are buying parts, an easy way to remember what you need is that everything below the top of the block is the same as the 88-91 Civic/CRX Si D16A6 - everything above the top of the block (including head gasket) is the same as the 88-89 (not 86-87) Integra D16A1 - the only exceptions to this are the timing belt itself which is the same as the 88 Prelude 2.0 Si (tensioner, water pump, etc. are same as D16A6), the camshaft timing belt gears which are DOHC ZC only (you can use B-series gears if you know how to install them as the timing marks are different) and the pistons which are DOHC ZC only

timing belt has to BE DOHC 2.0 not the single cam 2.0 or your brains will explode when you match the new one with the old one.

FYI maintenance parts are pretty easy to get for this motor, you just need the right part number at the store.
