Default Collector welding

Hi Guys,

I have used the search button and looked at lots of posts but can not find the answer.

Do you weld the inside of the collector or what kin of penetration do you get on sch10 pipe as in most pictures I have seen there are no beveling to the pipes. I have also seen pictures where there are no visible welds on the inside which would indicate not pull penetration.

I always bevel the collector pieces near the flange. But never for full pen, just to get more meat than a seal weld.

I have had a go at welding it and have not sign of penetration on the inside I also purged it which I assume was not really required if its not getting full penetration on the joint!

Tried one and two passes but no difference. Material is sch10.

run more amps with a large gas lens and backpurge.

taper down the amps with your pedal though as you get close to the turbo inlet opening or you will get the whole thing glowing.

if you bevel the edges as good as you can (sides) and use lots of heat you can get almost down into the root. then just use your burr to clean it up and soften the harsh edges.

you CAN get an extended reach nozzle for regular style collets that you can reach into most normal angle collectors to weld the inside too. not many people go this route. You would want to do it after tacking and before final weld. you cant go very hot with this though unless your welding in an argon chamber because you will sugar the outside of the collector.

Would be good to see a picture of one of yours before De-burring so I can see what I should expect.

I`ll have another go tomorrow I will take a few pictures. Do you do it in one pass?
