So you want a car that does everything, but you know nothing. And let me guess, you want to spend as little as possible?

Haha, don't we all?

If you want something that is streetable and good on the track, as in circle track, just upgrade the suspension and make sure it runs. Then have fun with it.

Start with replacing all the old and worn suspension, steering, and brake parts. You'll thank yourself down the road.

Not sure about the specs on the SI, but I did a DA brake conversion on my car so it has disc brakes and they are larger than stock in my case.

True Story. I just left the stock front knuckles and slapped a set of Wilwoods on there.

If funds are no problem, go all out! Don't do a mini-me if you can afford more. GSR, K20A, J32 or something along those lines.

do not replace an a6 with a y8, that's downgrading the bottom end. At least put the y8 head on the a6 block.

Mini-me - Is a waste of time and effort. I don't know what track you are referring to but a mini-me wont outrun much.

You want to track the car...and funds aren't a problem...yet you want to replace a low power single cam for another? Unless you have plans of building/boosting the single jingle, it will be a huge waste of time.

Not a bad idea. The A6 isn't very impressive, but it's a fine motor for what he wants to do. Keep it stock and stay in that class.

Yup, that's pretty agreeable. The Z6 would be an upgrade because of the VTEC head, but the block is the same as the A6. So the A6-mini me would be the best bet for money.

Not really sure what this means. I used the internet as my 'car guy' and got along quite fine. I was completely clueless a couple years ago. Since then I've rebuilt a couple motors, changed a few clutches, and overall just gained some valuable experience.

Aw, by that logic aren't all the SOHC VTEC motors a waste of time and effort? I like the mini-me if that's as far as the budget can go.

This is my thought process too. If funds aren't an issue, there is no reason to go anything short of a mid-engine twin turbo J37A. Right? I wouldn't build and boost a single cam personally. I think if you are going to build a motor, you might as well start with something a little bit bigger and better. Unless he is trying to be the best SOHC around or brag about having a built SOHC, the DOHC is a better option.

Here is the questions you MUST answer.

street as in street legal?
Track - what kind of track? I'm assuming quarter mile because you asked for info on the J motor. That's not going to be very street friendly at all. Good luck finding a hood.

What are your POWER goals?

Street legal depends on where you are located too.

Track is probably 1/4 mile since that's what HondaTech seems to be focussed on. The J-series can fit under the hood on an EG, not sure on the EF. Depends on your mounts I guess and your ride height for the oil pan. There is also the option of a hood scoop like the 5.0 Mustangs had back in the day. The big backwards scoop, whatever you call em, to clear the carb or supercharger.

Lastly, power goals are important. I read this thing once about power in the Honda world. A 600 HP GTR is fast on the street. A 600 HP integra is just scary on the street. You have to take it into perspective. You can drive it, but it may not be reliable, safe, or comfortable depending on what you do to it.

Just a little bit about how streetable some cars are. My civic has a ACT clutch, forget which one. But anyways, it's a 'racing' clutch. It's pretty hard to press down compared to stock. My girlfriend actually can't press it down, not saying much but just remember that. If she needed to drive me somewhere and my car was the only car, we wouldn't be getting anywhere. The gap between engaged and disengage is VERY narrow on my pedal. It makes it hard to let the clutch grab on a hill. So if I'm at a light, I have to press on the brake to stay put. Then if we start moving there is no slowly let off the clutch till you feel it grab, let go of the brake and drive. It's drop the brake, hit the gas, roll backwards, spin the wheels and go forward. Just little things to keep in mind. Also, if you go to pep boys to get your oil changed and you tell them it's an 89 civic and they will fill it with D15 levels of oil, even if it's a V6 J32 in there. And when you tell them it's a 94 Del Sol VTEC because you swapped a B16 in there, they will look at you like an idiot when they see your little EF civic. And don't give me crap about getting my oil done somewhere, I was in a rush and I dropped the car off!

End rant.
