I just purchased a 98 Civic DX hatchback with a bad 5spd tranny. I have been trying to find a decent mileage replacement, but haven't had any luck. What other transmissions would be a direct swap?

From what I have found, it seems like I can look for
96-00 Civic w/1.6
96-00 Acura EL w/1.6

Are those my only options?

 

any d series 5spd should work, y7,y8, or z6, no need to swap axle either

 

Any '92 - '00 Civic/Del Sol transmission will work except '99 - '00 Civic SiR and Del Sol VTEC.
