I f***ked up my Y7 so I saw an ad on Craigslist for a rebuilt one.

He has never run it in a car since rebuilding it. He said he has heavy weight oil in the piston walls and turns it weekly as well as torquing all parts to spec.

It doesn't have anything attached to it other than some pumps so we can't test it really.

My question for you guys is.. How can I be sure it runs and nothing was done wrong and messed up? Any tests I could perform other than taking the whole damn thing apart?

I'm gonna see about a guarantee but to save us all some time, is there any way of me being sure it's good to go?

 

Its hard to say man. I would go over there and look at it, turn the crank over, make sure everything is smooth, no weird sounds. In the end your just going to have to take a bit of a gamble and trust him, or dont. It looks really clean in the picture, I would lean towards trusting him personally. Talk to him and ask if he has dont this before or if this is the first motor he ever built.

 

He says he has worked with Hondas his whole life and has rebuilt many as well as modifying them with turbos, internals, etc, etc.

A compression test and listening for sounds would tell me a lot I heard. Anything else?

 

you're not gonna find someone that is going to allow you to compression test an engine on a stand.

 

He said it was alright to come and compression test it. I'm assuming he would work with us and allow us to somehow test it safely.

 

I'm not sure how you can get an accurate compression test on a stand. It needs to be spun with a starter, right? Your not going to get an accurate reading trying to spin it by hand.
