Default EK: MTF or 10W-40 for tranny fluid?

For my EG, some good folks on here say using 10W-40 is better than the MTF, especially with the ISB issue.

How about my 1997 Civic LX Sedan D16Y7 manual? The book says MTF, and I don't know if this year had the ISB issue, so I was thinking the Honda MTF, unless the 10W-40 is also better for this car.

Thanks!

If you use motor oil in the Honda manual trans, make sure it is full synthetic oil. I recommend full synthetic Mobile 1 + full synthetic Lucas stabilizer (3:1 ratio). Smooth as butter shifts in hot or cold, plus good for trans. When I switched to this combination, I was able to downshift into 1st at 15+mph in my 25 year old Honda with 280,000 miles on it. It was a big deal considering before it never went into 1st unless stopped.

Don't use conventional oil. It breaks down too fast and the synchronizers might wear out quicker.

OP and anyone who views this thread, this is bad advice and it it is advised to avoid doing anything recommended above!!!

That's funny advice as everything I have ever read says don't use synthetic anything in your manual transmission. The top recommended fluids for honda transmission are old fashion mineral oil. First time I have seen anyone recommend Mobil 1 as well.

Op don't use motor oil as it is recommended as only a temporary solution. Honda mtf, torco mtf, amsoil mtf, and pennsoil synchromesh would be the only ones I would consider.

For a 96-00 MT, this and only this. 92-95 calls for oil, 96-00 calls for Honda MTF.

N-bomb, I'mma ole G- n-bomb. What you think Homda MTF is?!?!

You need to check a bit of your facts to clean yo advice up. Mobile 1 is sitting in my manual right now and has been for 10+ years. The car is 25 years old and has appx 280,000 miles on it. You cannot deny that.

Sure, MTF is good, but it isn't perfect for every setup. I've been there with MTF and found a superior fluid mix.
