Default ef b18 transmission problems

So yet another problem but this time ill take the blame... bought a transmission from craigslist came off an ef and I think it was screwed but anyways let me tell you the symptoms.

When I start the car up in the morning and let it warm up a little, when I go in to first sometimes it doesnt go in ( like hitting a wall ) or it grinds pretty nasty. I found a remedial for this. What I do is I go to 2nd then first and it always go's in smoothly. Another thing when the car is rolling I cant put it into first no matter what. so if im coming to a red light and rolling at 2mph then it turns green I cant go into 1st i gotta keep going from 2nd. Its not that big of a deal but its annoying and im wondering if this is the shift fork. Im going to try some penzoil syncromesh see if that helps. Also 5th gear doesnt go in most the time and when it does it doesnt grind or anything. im thinking shift fork also for this problem or worn out syncro.

NOTE: The idiot i bought the transmission from left the speed sensor hole open and I think he had it outside because when I installed it i made sure everything was drained out by taking out the drain bolt a bunch of water with some oil came out. I think this could also be the problem to my transmission issues. Maybe the gears got rusted.

How is your shift linkage?
What are you using to connect the shift linkage to the transmission selector shaft?
How is your clutch?

I'd say it's your linkage or the user most likely. Linkage plays a big role if it's not connected properly.
