99 Accord performance boost!
Hey guys what's up... I have a 99 accord 2.3L 4 cyl F23a SOHC automatic. I'm not trying to build a race car here by any means, but I do want to add some HP to it just because. I'm not a huge gear head or anything like that, but I know some things. What would you guys suggest I should do to the engine to get some more horsepower out of it. Cam, pistons, headers/exhaust... I'm not a huge fan of exhaust considering it's an automatic, but I'm not opposed either. The only thing I have on the car right now is a short ram intake and that is all. Any suggestions guys??? Thanks.
What kind of budget are you looking at? What HP expectations do you have in mind? Is this a Daily Driver? Will this be for drag strip/highway blasts or corner carving? Once these questions are answered it makes it easier for others to help out, with decent responses.
with an auto is real tuning even an option? maybe a piggy back... i'm sure it's not straight forward, easy or cheap. and like you say, there's not much power to be realized.
OP, without a clear direction, a solid budget and some clever ingenuity you're just wasting time and money.
if a thorough tune up- ignition system, fluids, filters, various adjustments... don't provide the performance you're looking for, sell the car and buy a V6 equipped model. As crazy as it sounds the price premium on the used car market for the V6 model over the 4cyl is less than what you'll be spending on performance upgrades. and you can be sure you'll see 50hp and more than 50ft-lbs increase plus bigger wheels, bigger brakes... the list goes on.
good luck!

Yah, there really isn't much power to be made. You could always convert it to a manual, that makes it MUCH funner, not to mention it will give it a lot more pep. This can be done for somewhere around ~$400. Used tranny, low mileage clutch (like my Exedy organic I'm trying to get rid of), salvage yard shifter/clutch assembly. Do you have a coupe or a sedan? Either way, the CG chassis is one of the last Accords I will ever be able to truly appreciate so its not completely worth not putting any money into.

it would be more fun, but it's a lot of work if you do it yourself, and a lot of money if you pay someone else to do it.
I sure didn't think so. It was an excellent learning experience and looking back at it now there really wasn't all that much technical know-how needed. A lot of unbolting and bolting, that and some common sense.
yea i feel you guys on the car being an automatic. I'll just start looking for a nice manual somewhere and probably go from there. Thanks for the input fellas.
