Default D16 Turbo Build

Well, we're coming into winter here in Canada and it's time for my first turbo build and car build in general! Just to give you a run down of Canada, I live in Ontario and here we have very strict emission and safety laws, it's horseshit. I will slowly be buying parts for my build throughout the next little while, as well as partially building my motor and cleaning up my car. I just want to start a new thread to show progress over the next 5-6 months. I'll start with my ideal build/plans as of now and then update what I buy and do differently and when I get into the technical parts, I'll post updated pictures of that as well.

Please feel free to give me some feedback/input on my build. It's much appreciated.

Car: 1999 Honda Civic Si - D16Y8 with 220,000 kilometres, 5 speed transmission, all original body and paint (Tafetta White NH 578).

Horsepower Goals: 230HP+ as a reliable daily driver.

Motor Parts: Eagle H-Beam forged connecting rods (with notched block for the rods), Wiseco or CP forged pistons 75mm (9.0:1 compression ratio approximately), ACL race bearings, ARP headstuds, stage 3 clutch, 450cc+ fuel injectors, Walbro 255lph fuel pump, dual core half rad with slim fan, OEM headgasket+all new gaskets/seals etc., stock head.

Turbo Parts: T3/T4 Turbonetics turbo (.63AR and .50 compressor), stainless steel Ramhorn manifold, Greddy Type S blow off valve, 38mm Tial waste gate, 38mm dump pipe+elbow pipe, front mount intercooler+piping, stainless braided oil feed+return lines, fuel pressure regulator, electronic or manual boost controller, oil catch can, turbo timer, AEM air/fuel wideband gauge, boost gauge and oil pressure gauge.

Tuning Accessories: P28 OBD1 ECU chipped/socketed, Hondata S300 V2, OBD2B-OBD1 conversion harness.

General Car Parts: Skunk 2 cat-back exhaust with a gutted cat, Skunk2 Pro Series Coilovers, LCA's (Skunk2 or BWR), Beaks bar, 15x8 or 16x8 rims (Diamond Racing Wheels, Enkei 92s, XXR, Phat *** etc.) with offset, rear disc brake conversion, SiR interior conversion (hopefully front and rear seats, door panels and cluster), carbon fibre hood, black housing headlights with HID's, Type R grill with red Si badge, red stitched shift boot, short shifter/****, Wink 5 mirror.

Stated here is what I hope to have eventually. As of now I have the Eagle H-Beam connecting rods, ARP headstuds, ACL race bearings, Skunk 2 Pro Series Coilovers, black housing headlights with HID's and the carbon fibre hood.

I will post updates whenever I do something or buy something and hopefully with a picture. Remember to please provide any feedback etc. as it will help me in my build. I may be forgetting things right now but I think that's virtually all.

I'll watch this for sure. Still not a huge fan of the Y8. Had a good friend of mine put down probably 220 HP (It was a street tune he did using crome so we don't know for sure) and he spun a bearing. Which is common with Y8s. Even the NA ones. He ended up swapping a LS in there and getting a new manifold.

I hear it is a frequent problem with the Y8's also. The crank is apparently not able to let enough oil through due to it's one oil port, where as the Z6's have two but they're a little smaller than that of the Y8. I've heard of people I think having another port made in the crank (not sure if it's true) or just swapping in the Z6 crank. Thanks and keep an eye!

Yeah, something along those lines. Pretty sure it has to do with the oil not being warm enough and it's too thick to run properly. Some of it is probably driver error, but some of it is design.

Nice. I'll be keeping an eye on this as well. I've heard the z6 possibly flows better on the high end yeah?

Thanks Binfordtools! I've heard that's the plus side to going with the Z6 crank.

bigG - I would be but you're asking a little too much, I can get Wiseco's stock bore for $450. I would take them for $350 shipped if that's not a low blow. Let me know.

Nah man, thanks for the opinion but I really don't care about it lol.
I've owned many B series swaps (GSR, TypeR, B20V) etc.
Been there and done that, time for something else.

Should have gone Mid engine RWD J32 turbo swap! I personally want a D16Z6 AWD turbo wagon. That would be something to drop the kids off at soccer practice in.

You're right, that bumper and hood there is the stuff I use for winter, although I'm not driving it this winter I still put that stuff on for now until it'll be torn apart. I do have the original Tafetta White front bumper and my carbon fibre hood.

It's a direct bolt in as far as I'm aware.

Just an update on the build. Winter has officially arrived in Canada with the first snowfall!
The motor has been removed from the Civic and will be getting torn apart and sent away for machining, checking, etc. in a week or so.
I picked up an entire turbo kit from a friend of mine (it is eBay) who didn't need it anymore for $500. It's all brand new and complete. I will be upgrading my turbo, blow off valve and waste gate come spring (after I'm done University for the year lol). This eBay **** will just be getting me on the road, tuned and driving! I also picked up a gold ASR subframe brace, rear red LCA's, Skunk2 short shifter, CRV cluster and am looking to buy my P28 or equivalent ECU with Hondata S300 V2 with the boost solenoid!

Freemananana, I don't really care if you follow my build or not. I'm doing this for myself more than anything so I can see the progress of the Civic. Being a University student and spending $20,000+ on one year of school is far more important than a $1,500 Civic. I'm sure as **** med school will buy me a much nicer car in the long run. The eBay **** is only going to be on the car for about 1.5 months, then once I begin working again come mid May, I will be buying all the better stuff. Feel free to follow, or not. It doesn't matter to me.

Kyden, I would wait until I gathered all of the good parts but unfortunately that isn't an option. The car will have to be used to get me to and from my placements in my second semester and buying that stuff is out of the budget right now, although it's what I would prefer to do, I just can't.

93CX, feel free to do whatever you feel, like I said to Freemananana, this is to track the progress of my Civic, not to please everyone else lol.

If I were working full time, I would obviously have a lot more money to play with.

Haven't posted here in a while because I've been so busy at University and I haven't had much time to work on my car. As you know, I'm located in Ontario, Canada and the winter here has been fu**ing ridiculous! Basically, I have the following parts:

-Complete turbo kit (turbo, FMIC/piping, blow off valve, waste gate, ram horn manifold, etc)
-Hondata S300 V1 in an OBD1 PR4 ECU
-Eagle H-Beam connecting rods, ACL race bearings, ARP headstuds, AEM cam gear
-Skunk2 Pro Series coilovers, rear red LCA's, gold ASR subframe brace, front strut bar, SiR rear disc brake conversion
-SiR cluster, black housing headlights, 6000K HID's, carbon fibre hood, SiR interior conversion

Hopefully within the next two weeks or so, depending on how my bank account looks due to schooling, I will be placing an order for the following:

-Yonaka Stage 3 clutch
-Yonaka motor mounts
-AEM air/fuel wideband gauge
-Walbro 255lph fuel pump
-Engine gasket kit
-Yonaka OBD2B-OBD1 ECU conversion harness
-Blackworks racing adjustable fuel pressure regulator
-Gates racing timing belt/water pump kit

After this order I should only need a few other odds and ends such as; fuel injectors, an electronic boost controller and a couple more gauges.

Lately, I've been working on 'gutting' my interior (only the rear seats will be removed because I never have anyone else in the car. This upcoming week I'll hopefully finish that up, along with the SiR interior conversion. I also plan to put some hours in on the engine bay, I would to get rid of power steering, air conditioning and potentially cruise control and to put some cleaning time in on it! The motor was disassembled last night and it will be sent to the machine shop next week, when it's been freshened up I'll then be able to order the correct pistons and bearings.

I'll keep you guys posted, spring is approaching us here in Ontario, normally April the salt is cleared off the roads.

Well, haven't updated in a while. There is still snow on the ground here in Canada but we're almost into Spring. Due to some financial issues I encountered I am going to be ordering the parts this week, then the motor will be onto the machine shop and it will be smooth sailing from there on out. There is still lots of time because of our extremely long winter. I recently picked up some parts:

-Apexi AVC-R boost controller (much better than the AEM Tru-Boost)
-3" down pipe
-520cc high impedance injectors
-Civic TypeR carpet

I only have a picture of the TypeR carpet right now, I'll put some pictures up of the other stuff tomorrow. Can't wait to be finished school and be able to put some damn hours in on this thing!
