how many miles on it?
did you ask when the last time it had been serviced?
last time water pump and timing belt got changed?
when the car is running and it starts to overheat, is the top hose hot?
check your spark plugs on the backfiring issue.

that's all i have for now.

200,000 plus definitely
I asked and he said he had no clue
The Water pump and time belt have probably never been changed
I dont believe so
and I will
I pretty sure it needs a full tune up

might be your thermostat is causing the overheating.

This seems like a long road of work ahead of you. The water pump probably needs to be replaced. You could get a new thermostat if your fans aren't turning on. Check the spark plugs for the backfire. It must be running rich for there to be combustion in the exhaust, that's what backfiring is to me. Probably replace the spark plug wires and plugs. A new distributor cap. Change the oil, change the antifreeze and replace the water pump. Change the timing belt. Possibly a new fuel filter and call it good.

Aside from regular maintance, you got to figure out the backfire and your overheat issue.

Well i ran fuel cleaner in it today and it ran like a champ changed the spark plugs and tomorrow changing the oil/ oil filter filter and yes it is running rich because it only has headers, straight pipe, and catalytic converter

I know the exhaust prevents back pressure, but I didn't think any of that had to do with it running rich. I thought the ECU controlled the air to fuel ratio with the O2 sensors, which is usually on the header or just after.
