Default homemade fiberglass hood.

Has anyone ever tried it. I saw fiberglass at pep boys and thought that I might be able to make my own hood and yes it would be painted.

you would have to make a mold of it somehow, both of the top outer surface, and the frame on the underside. I don't know how much the fiberglass is, but it might end up being more expensive than just buying one, especially if you've never worked with fiberglass before.

well, it's really simple actually, i've made about 6 or 7 in my time. to make the mold you just rub mold release all over your hood, lay a thick layer or two of fiberglass(weaved) over the hood with the resin on the fiberglass. let it sit for a few hour and you have your mold. pull it off and flip it over. now rub release wax in the mold and repeat the process of laying fiberglass and resin inside the mold, this time using the fiberglass cloth that's not woven just the strands. we've always just made really light weight hood skins that require hoodpins. never made them to accept the stock latches before, it'd be a lot harder.
as far as cost. it's about 4$ a square yard for the fabric. and 10$ for the resin and hardner. another 10 for the mold release wax. for the first mold and hood total expect to pay about 75 bucks at the very most. after that it's about 10or15 bucks a hood. look in your local phonebook under plastics for supplies. good luck.

If anyone near Nashville would like to make me a lightweight fiberglass hood for my 240sx I'd pay ya a little cash on top of the materials...

This is the mold I made for an EG hood...
I sprayed orange gelcoat first, the gelcoat really helps keep the resin from attacking the paint... plus the gelcoat gets really hard and can be polished quite nicely...
