Icon6 Automatic Transmission Problems

I am having car problems. It may be the transmission but I am not completely sure. The car would pick up speed like it normally does when I am in drive (D4) (automatic transmission) and when I press on the gas lightly it will go. But once it reaches higher speed as I am pressing the gas, the car's rpm would rise but the car wont pick up speed until it randomly wants to. I drive a 98 honda accord. If you guys can help, that'll be great. Thank you. When I am moving, sometimes it'll shake like someone badly drifting in a manual transmission.

Also, I bought ATF DW-2 and it looks like my 1998 Honda Accord takes DW-1. If I put the DW-2 in it, would it cause any problems or would it be fine?

Thanks, guys.

What speeds are we talking of, ~30MPH? 45MPH? 65MPH?
Does this slipping occur when the transmission is in third gear?
Note the shifts it will be after the second shift 1>2(first shift) 2>3(second shift), if so 3rd gear clutch pack is known to go bad in the M6HA transmission family.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for replying. It slips when it's in gear 4. I tried it in gear 3 and it still slipped. It never happened before. I usually lose speed around like 30 to 40 mph. The gas pedal would still be pressed but no speed, just RPM increasing. The transmission dip stick, it looks like it's midpoint between the markings of low and high. People are telling me to clean the transmission plug and replace the filter and replace the fluid. Others are telling me to rebuild or replace my tranny.

I noticed something that might help you help me. In the past when I slow down by applying pressure to the brake pedal, once the car slows/stops it would jerk forward a little bit as the brakes are pressed. I have been ignoring that because I thought it was normal. My theory is that while the brakes are pressed and all that jerking at every stop resulted in my transmission gears being shredded slowly day by day.

I would pull the drain plug, drain the old fluid and check the magnetic tip of the plug for debris. It will probably be a mess coming out.

More likely what is happening is due the transmission slipping, when it engages a lower gear there is more power transmitted to the wheels. The pedal pressure you normally use to slow from 3rd or 4th gear is inadequate when the transmission down shifts to 2nd or 1st gear and you will need to apply more brake pressure to maintain brake control or the car will jerk forward.

Is the CEL or D4 light blinking at all? Have you checked for codes?

M6HA is known for issues. From bearing and clutch pack failure to PRV valve jamming. One of the worst issues is 3rd gear can degrade enough to break and jam the shafts locking up the wheels while driving at highway speeds. I would bring the car to a transmission specialist and get quotes on rebuild. There are some major issues with this transmission, and yours appears to have several.
