Default 97 ex civic rev limit 5000

I have a 97 civic ex I just aquired and have been trying to figure out why it won't rev past 5000 rpm. Anyone have insight on this. The motor is stamped d16a. The car has a cold air intake and headers on it. It is manual and I have no clue what to do.

You have an OBD0 engine in an OBD2 car. Rev limit is set by the ECU, so what do you have?

Not entirely true. The D16A was also used in the 97-99 MB4 (JDM Domani). P08 head, PBB ECU, 5500 VTEC cross.

OP, check your head stamp for the head code, as well as the date stamp. They should be near (or between) your exhaust runners, and the year should be x|x, x both being numbers. Also, find your ECU behind the passenger's side kick panel and give us the numbers on it.

P2p a33 ecu. No check engine light. The head code is 1/9.

D16Y8 head/automatic
D16Y8 ECU/manual. Rev limit is 7K rpm for this ECU.

Post a picture of the stamp on your block.

Does the CEL work?

The oil is good. I replaced the cap and button. Tried the ckf trick didn't work just threw codes. I unhooked the vtec and didn't get a light. If I have to swap to obd1 what do I need to get? I'm starting to wonder if I'm waisting my time here

So far it seems you have a
P2J-2 - 1996 Automatic D16Y8 head
D16A - 1997-1999 JDM Honda Domani (MB4)
P2P-A33 - 96-97 EX coupe manual

Now I think you need to consider looking at the CKF (if it's there) and what intake manifold you're running (check if you're running a 2-wire external or 3-wire TB internal IACV). Because you're running an auto intake manifold (assuming it's the same IM with the head) with a manual ECU. This raises a red flag, unless my research of the P2J-2 code is wrong. CHECK YOUR INTAKE MANIFOLD FOR IACV SETUP AND FOR CKF .
According to this guy, the D16A doesn't have CKF, but I'm not entirely sure which D16A he had.

This is the CFK Bypass trick in case you need it: http://ff-squad.com/wp/?p=309]

Also, is your ECU modified? Chipped? Probably a poorly tuned launch control/2 step.?
CHECK YOUR ECU IF ITS CHIPPED.

Is your mechanical timing correct? Jumped a few teeth? Check your TDC that the cam and crank line up as well as the pistons.

Consider using another P2P ECU (depending on your IACV setup and whether you're running OBD2A or OBD2B)

As far as I know the ecu isn't chipped. I tried an ecu out of a 97 del sol and it revved to 4k and stopped.

Already tried the ckf bypass at got a cel. If I keep trying to run over 5k I get a cel multiple cylinder missfire. So what head is suppose to be on a 97 ex manual?
