Default cam choices for nonvtec (I know, another one)

He is a short description of the build I have planned.

B20 nonvtec. Either 84 or 84.5

Full exhaust already in the car 2.5 inch. No name header. Will upgrade down the road.

Intake and throttle body. Waiting until after I build the head to decide. Match the rpms a little better. Of course injectors.

Bottom end will be built. Arp rod bolts, alc bearings and stock rods. Not sure on pistons but 11.2-11.7 is where I plan to keep it.

Full tune on a chipped p75.

The head is a p8r. Full port and polish with crower valvetrain. Unsure if I want to upgrade the valves or not.

The car will be semi-daily driven but will see the autocross course.

My question is, other the 403s and 404s, what would be a GOOD cam for low end and mid range power? Don't want to have.to rev it to 8k to make power. I do not mind lopey isles (my truck had a 347 for the longest time)

I have looked into Crane stage 2s and 3s. Also the Brain Crowers. I have not seen as many people who have run these. Everyone just says to get 404s and call it a day.

Just seeing if there are other options or if I can get more info on these cams.

Im using Crane 101-0016 (stage4?) and great low mid range. your header choice will also come into play.

I might be thinking of going to 404/405's in the near future (since FrankAcura has inspired me)

Im also running a 11.2 area CR

405's must be degreed. I had a guy install them at 0,0 and the car lost 12" of vacuum. Went from 17" to 5". Totally killed all low end and mid-range. Once I get them degreed it should pick up all that lost vacuum.

This isn't an all motor car so I can't compare any power plots for you guys. I'm just expressing that the 405's are not at all a drop in cam. 404's and under are a lot more forgiving as far as overlap is concerned, which would yield a better mid-range..

Not considering 405s. Too aggressive for my plans.

How do the cranes idle? Any dyno numbers?

Im running 405 and i dont recommend them on small compression motors i was running 14.1 pistons with those cams and the midrange was not the best, but in top they made power past 9000

If you're tuner is competent, cams with 215 - 225 dur @. 050 will work good, with good all-around power.

There are some couple tuning adjustments for hotter profiles that help deal with the increased overlap.
