04 civic clutch replacement
To replace the clutch in a 2004 Civic, can the engine be hoisted from the top of the engine bay while leaving the transmission in place, or do both need to be hoisted out together
I've heard of people pulling the tranny out the top and leaving the engine, but not vice versa. Seems like that would be harder than pulling out the whole assembly.
I was hoping I could leave the trans, halfshafts, ball joints intact and leave the wheels on so as to roll the chassis back out of the way after lifting the engine out.
you're gonna need to take the wheels off. im pretty sure. loosen the subframe and tranny enough to lower both of them. you should have enough of a gap between the motor and bell housing to get the clutch out.
If the subframe needs to be dismounted to an extent to free the transmission, what else needs to come off because of this? Or is that it?
I'm about to replace my clutch, as well as the syncros, seals, bushings, bearings, etc. but not sure who makes quality transmission parts for these, other than ordering directly from Honda.

I did this 2 weeks ago, and just took the tranny out, there are a lot less stuff to take off the tranny than there is the engine.
Support the engine and tranny on jacks and take the front engine/tranny mount off and than take the passenger side mount off of the tranny and than there is a rear mount by the firewall. I take the 3 bolts (2 17 mm head bolts, and 1 14 mm I believe) off the passenger side of the subframe and loosen the driver side 17 mm and take off the 14 mm bolt completely. that way the subframe can just hang there and you can get the tranny out by pulling the wheel hub aside and slide it out through the side, instead of trying to wrestle it between the engine and subframe.
That's the way i did it anyway. I guess you can completely take the subframe off. I did this in my garage with limited room so I left it in like that.
As for a good quality clutch kit I found an Exedy dealer in my area. Exedy is a high quality clutch. Exedy also makes Honda's clutches. I live in Edmonton Canada. and I picked the whole clutch kit up for less than 200.00. Just be sure you ask for a stock replacement, unless you want to upgrade to a high performance clutch. As for the gears and bearings. I just went and got them from Honda. but I'm sure I could've got them somewhere else cheaper.

Just as a head's up, JMGCROWN, you can get the Helm's Service Manual for the 01-05 Civic for $52.50 here: http://www.helminc.com/helm/product2...A08&itemtype=N
Much cheaper then you were suggesting.
