Default Oil Pan Gasket

I noticed a month ago my oil pan has some minor leakage. Anyways I decided I would replace the gasket at my next oil change (a week ago). RD1 99-01 jdm engine

I did it by myself and did it from under the car. The worst part was having to remove the exhaust so i could drop the pan.

I cleaned up the mating surfaces and I put new hondabond on the 4 cracks where the oil pump and whatever is on the flywheel side are at. I torqued down to 9 ft/lb which i think was too much and I think I didn't get the right bolt pattern. The service manual showed only 6 bolts to torque in a pattern which has to be wrong because there's about 20 or more bolts/nuts.

Anyways I keep checking it and it's leaking even worse now so I know I jacked it up. It's really not that big of a deal to have a oil leak but it's also not desirable. So I'll be redoing the job here in another 3-4k miles at my next oil change and just check the levels weekly until then and top off accordingly.

Here's the question, does anyone know the correct spec and torque pattern? A friend also suggested putting the rtv all the way around the gasket even though I know the service manual doesn't call for that. However the service manual didn't have the correct bolt torque pattern either.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Default Re: Oil Pan Gasket

The way I do pans are i get them all snugged up first, and then tighten every second one untill I do a full round, and then do the new ones around again, and then i go around each bolt and nut again 2 more times, but going from next to next. I never use a tq wrench when doing them. I use a speed handle to tighten them untill I can't really tighten them any more.

I have never had a problem with doing it this way over the last 15 years or so.

Also a big thing is with honda oil pan gaskets, you need to make sure you removed the old metal ring that normally will stay on the studs that are into the block. Most people never do, and that is where is leaks from again every time.
