I have a 98 civic lx with the stock d16y7. The belts were squealing for a bit so finally changed them but still squealing. Drove like that for a bit longer and car started overheating, but usually only if I drove over 70 mph or for 30 min or longer continuously. If I slowed or stopped it would cool. Changed thermostat, checked rad, fans working normally. No leaks. Bled the cooling system for bubbles. Still heating around 70 mph. Figured it was the water pump or head gasket. Still squealing btw. Drive it today and the belt for the a/c compressor broke. Squealing went away so obviously that's what caused the squeal but the car didn't overheat. Can this be related? Or separate probs and I got lucky it didn't overheat?

 

The ac compressor clutch/pulley is frozen up and dragging causing the belt to BRAKE the engine putting stress on it and making it overheat. My best guess

 

If thats the case, any suggestions to loosen it up that doesn't involve new parts? The belt was under warranty but I'd like to see if that was the cause of the heating issue before I get a new pump and timing belt and ****. What a pita that is.

 

Sounds like you need a new compressor.

This Honda has a rotary-type compressor in it. They are good for efficiency, but lack reliability. I repaired this same problem on a 2000 Civic Ex after the AC compressor seized. Upon seizure, the force of the engine turning the belt literally sheared the AC compressor shaft and the AC clutch went flying off with the belt. I'll bet this is what happened to yours, too.

Later I disassembled the seized AC compressor to find the aluminum rotary inside shattered. This is why I prefer the older piston-type compressors like used on the 88-89 Preludes. I wouldn't bother with a used rotary compressor. It would be a ticking time bomb that might get you by for another season. You should go ahead and replace the drier and expansion valve if you didn't know that already. And watch how much PAG oil you add, and spread some oil in the lines and o-rings too.
