Gonna try this all motor thing one more time...
After 2-3 months of contemplating on giving up on Honda builds I've decided to try one more time. Last year I built an all motor setup I was very impressed with and was very fast IMO. Here is the rundown of my motor last year;
LS/VTEC:
PnP B16 head
Skunk2 flat face valves
Skunk2 bronze valve guides
Supertech dual valvesprings a and retainers
Buddy Club spec IV cams(degree'd)
JG Edelbrock adjustable cam gears
Cosmetic Headgasket
Golden Eagle LS/VTEC kit
81.5mm b18b1 block
Wiseco 12.5:1 pistons
Eagle rods
LS crank(89mm)
ACL Race bearings(rod,main,thrust)
PLM RMF Narrow Replica header
Edelbrock Performer X intake manifold
Professional products 68mm throttle body
Hondata intake manifold gasket
Skunk2 composite fuel rail
Acura RDX fuel injectors
AEM Adjustable fuel pressure regulator
Custom made 3" short ram intake
Blox velocity stack and filter
Walbro 255lph fuel pump
3" exhaust
B16 transmission
LS 5th gear
OEM ITR LSD
I ended up making 219.9whp 148wtq.

Car ran flawless, spun 1st, and all the way through second. One early morning I took it for a drive and left and punched it in first shirt shifted and was just cruising and it started to miss really bad. I pulled over looked over everything and it was all fine started it it was missing the same so I was gonna drive then it just shut off. Called some friends we tried everything
And finally out a 19 on the crank and it wouldn't rotate. Got it home and started ripping it apart and found this;

ONE valvespring failed and dropped a valve causing it to do the damage you see above. It's been about 2-3 months and I recently bought a complete GSR swap. My intentions were to just do an OEM rebuild but I would like to have at least 195-200whp just enough to have some fun. This is what I have planned for the GSR;
Stock Port head(p72)
Buddy Club Valve springs and titanium retainers
My old Spec IV cams
Skunk2 flat face valves
Skunk2 bronze valve guides
Skunk2 pro series intake manifold
Professional Products 68mm throttle body
81.5mm block
LS crank
Shot peened LS rods with arp rod bolts
All ACL bearings
P30 pistons
PLM tri-Y header
I know for a fact I'm not investing a lot of money into a build to have something happen like this again. Like I said 195-200whp and I would be more than satisfied. May even do a 100 shot just for kicks.

Unsure it was either a keeper or the springs couldn't handle the abuse. Strange thing is out of all 16 of them only one broke. It looked as if the inside spring came lose causing it to drop a valve and smack the other 3.
FWIW, the very few engines that Ive personally seen with broken valvesprings did NOT drop the valve. The engine did still run since the other cylinders were stilll firing, they just misfired like a ****, lol
when you took it apart, were the keepers still sitting in the retainers? The top of the valvestem still secured in the retainer?

What supertechs were they..and how many rpm? It's possible that the combination of parts had a hell of a time with keeping the valve controlled and hell broke loose. Although a failed spring is certainly not impossible, I like to explore other ideas before blaming a part.

When you took it apart,do you remember seeing all the tops of the valvesstems in all the keepers still sitting in the retainers?
This tells us good information about to what was going on in there when it happened.

Are Skunk2 flat face valves of any qualiy?
Never used them before, but I always suspect the aftermarket part has something to do with it..

But I do know I read it somewhere (somewhat reputable) and I've been searching trying to find it again. Plus everything on the internet is true...
Run the Ferrea S10027 or the S10086 and you'll have a long lasting setup. Its more money up front but saves you thousands when you avoid something like this.
go with full ferrea products. try the skunk2 ultra street intake manifold, somebody on facebook posted good results of the ultra street manifold.
well that would explain a good amount if true.
personally i doubt it was the valvespring to fail. supertech springs have a great reputation and i use them in my boosted car 9000-9300 rpm rev limiter no issues.
how did the rod bearing look in that cyl? im wondering if a slightly spun bearing could have caused piston to valve contact. anyway, i would honestly use oem valves i dont think this motor you are building needs aftermarket valves
