JDM Type R Starter, USDM Equivalent?
I have a 96 spec JDM Type R motor that has the Honda P2T Mitsuba SM-422-12 starter. The starter is going bad (not completely sure if it just the solenoid or the motor as well) and I am looking to replace it but I realize there is no exact USDM equivalent to this starter.
The 96-97 Civics use a Mitsuba SM-422-09 (Honda part number 31200-P2C-004) and the 99-00 Civic Si uses a Mitsuba SM-442-13 (Honda part number 31200-P2T-J01). Are either of these able to fit into my JDM transmission/flywheel? I may want to just purchase a new OEM solenoid from one of these starters if it can directly replace my current solenoid.
Additionally, since it easier to repair the Nippondenso 228000-7200 (Honda part number 31200-P73-A01) starter from the USDM Type R using $20 dollar Nippondenso replacement contacts, I would rather have one of these so I can periodically rebuild the solenoid if necessary. Does anyone know if these starters will directly replace my current JDM starter? I know there is an issue with USDM starters in JDM flywheels, but I am not even sure what a JDM flywheel is.. I have a JDM Type R transmission of course and I put in a 7.5lb Fidanza flywheel right when I got the motor. Does that mean I have a JDM flywheel?

I hope this helps, I bought some 98spec suspension from these people and they still work great a year after. I know it's used and it's hit or miss really, but I didn't know there was a difference between starters, which I'm glad I know now.
If you really want new, I know a couple exporters in Japan, that do parts if it comes down to that. I hope somebody knows what starters would fit it. I'm gonna take a look at which one I have in mine tomorrow.

I am not sure I want to get another used one, cause I will eventually need to rebuild it again. I can get another used Mitsuba SM-422-12 for $65 from Steve at H Motors. I think this will be my last resort.
Do you think I should just repair my current starter at a local starter shop for $60 (with a 1 year warranty)?
If any B series starter will fit, is it recommended that I get another starter where the solenoid can easily be repaired with new contacts and a plunger? Or is this starter with the smaller solenoid actually better? Also, if what you say is true, rd91sib18c5r, then why is there a known problem with USDM starters and JDM flywheels?

ekcoupeh22, for a JDM 96 Type R you mean to say you would get an aftermarket starter for a USDM 97 Type R starter?
thundernoodle, why are the shafts longer on some of the B series starters? Also the Denso one uses a different solenoid type than the Mitsuba, but is one preferred over the other?

Are you talking about the USDM Type R? If so, that is incorrect because the USDM Type R and the USDM GSR use the same starter. Honda part number 31200-P73-A01 (Nippondenso 228000-7200)
I know the thread is old, but I have a RSX type R JDM K20a installed in my Honda Insight with a sketchy and dying starter. It states on the top that it's a Denso 280-0367. Here's a Amazon link. Hope this helps someone.
