10 years on Honda-Tech, 43 post, no intro, so rude of me.......
Name is Bennie Shapiro, I've been in the Honda world since 8th grade when the 86CRX si came out, I was in love! finally purchased one in 1990, lucky for me, my father had been building headers for race cars since way before my birth, I turboed the car with a T2 and ford t-bird intercooler, a custom JG clutch plate (STIFF!), and AIC made for a grand national, yokahama slicks for autocross. Stock 12 valve and ran a 13.6 when the fastest honda on the planet ran a 12.2, (miles bautista), I swapped a 94 GSR into it in 1994 complete with Hydro tranny, all parts were from a GSR including gauge cluster, swap took 6 weeks and it ran a 13.3........ and that was about it for drag racing for a long time. Before my CRX, I went to JHS and HS, living in monterey park CA, the true birthplace of fast and furious or whatever the scene is called now (I'm 40 and old). After all these years, I was mentioned in Honda Tuning Magazine in the August 2012 issue in the Gary Kubo interview (we were drummers in JHS together)...... I guess that is my claim to Honda fame..... but I have been rewarded with my now oldest friends being shop owners (maintinance and race), race car drivers, etc. (Hondatronics.com shameless plug, indy honda repair in las vegas)..... I get hooked up!!!
fast forward.... 40 cars mostly honda later, I now own an 04 EP3, 90 CRX SI, and 86 CRX DX
(1st new car!) EP3 has KPro, all stock k24a2, 04 rsx 6 speed trans with tsx 6th and factory lsd, type s front brakes and mugen sport struts and compliance bushings, exhaust is stock ep muffler wit 2.25 exhaust and a hi flow cat, stock engine mounts and clutch.... I swapped in 2006 @ 40,000 miles and now have 190,000. Its been a great car, but its getting tired and smoking a bit, (I drive the **** out of it) time for an rebuild.
I just bought a 1990 crx si, runs like crap, body is perfectly straight and great interior with exception of the rear bumper being hit,, easy fix and due to the instant salvage title of the car, I bought it for 900 bucks, (swapping IN a 92VX engine/tranny for economy) I will drive this while I tear down the EP3 and refresh the car.
Now here is where I want advice
I have a tired 04 k24a2 in my car (and a k20a3 with 40K sitting since 07) I'm happy with my power now but would love to have 50 more, I want to run on E85 daily and bump up CR (or maybe small boost on the stock a3?), I want excellent milage. What is the highest CR you can get out of a k24 with honda pistons (reliable and cheap, also stock rings as I want no blow by...... or does it matter any more?) and flat face valves? Would it be worth the price to go aftermarket to say 12:1 (or what is the absolute highest that you can run with 91 octane for emergency purposes) or would it be worth it efficiency wise to go 15:1? I also DO NOT want piston slap when starting, I want stock like start up I was also thinking of swapping in type s cams for better MPG on the small cam and a nice kick on the high cam....... before you ask me why I care about MPG..... I just do... as much if not more that high HP.... but I really want the best of both worlds. 30MPG hwy and 250 HP would be the best!
Help me out guys, thanks.
