'91 Hatch: Brand New Seatbelts Don't Work?
Hello everyone, I recently brought my '91 Hatch into the dealership to get the seatbelts replaced. Last week I went to get the belts diagnosed since they would not "lock" when pulling on them, no matter how hard or fast you pull. The issue was with both the passenger and driver belts, and the service tech told me that new assemblies had to be ordered and installed.
So today, the car has had brand new seatbelts installed under warranty, and I confirmed that the entire assemblies had been replaced, not just the belts. After pulling and yanking on them, they still would not lock.
If I slam on the brakes (while moving) and then quickly pull the belt, it will lock. The belt will not lock if I am stationary and the brake pedal is depressed.
Do other hatch owners have this issue? I am trying to figure out if hatch seatbelt mechanisms only lock when the brake pedal is abruptly depressed, or if they are supposed to lock whenever you pull on them. Thanks in advance!

Toyotas seat belt assemblies have a ball bearing that rolls forward to lock the belt, thus locking it under heavy braking. I'm pretty sure Honda uses this type of system as well.
Totally true but it can be a pain to get it serviced for free if you're not persistant. My wife works at a dealership but it still took me a week to get my 92 belts replaced to pass inspection.

When I went, it couldnt have been easier. They approved me to get all 4 belts replaced within 10 minutes of entering the "service bay". Sadly, they could only locate the drivers belt... This was at Courtesy/Auto Nation Honda in Sanford, Florida. Also have them check your front buckle receptacle things. They have a service bulletin on them and also get replaced, free of charge.
There was actually a safety recall on this (latching mechanism back in like '93), and YES the warranty booklet says lifetime warranty as long as the car is in use.
I would chalk this one up to a dealership service department who has never worked on an old EF, and installed improper. But that is my 2 cents. --yeah most dealers don't have any service techs around who have worked in a ef, i won't trust my car with them. They are used to working on fits, cr-v's and the newer stuff, not old cR-X EF Civics.
out of the EF series, the only 2 recalls i know of are a seatbelt as i listed, and a recall to inspect the distributor...
safe good cars.
for them not having the passenger side belts, give them time, they HAVE to honor the lifetime warranty and they HAVE to source them, they have printed warranty matter placed in every single one of these when new, and it is transferable. So HONDa BUCKle up
