Default 92 civic burning oil and smell

Hey HT. I have a 92 civic ex sedan and when I accelerate quickly I get an oil smell and I was told some smoke comes out of my exhaust. It also burns a lot of oil, I always have to put some in it. What problems could it be and how would I start diagnosing them?

Your motor is shot, replace it or rebuild it.

Really? I mean it really runs fine and fast besides the fact. Oh well, at least d15's are cheap and abundant

Don't bother replacing it. You can do an OEM-spec rebuild yourself for a lot cheaper than a good quality engine will cost you. The constant oil loss sounds like failing piston rings, or a leak. The burning at high RPMs sounds like a valve stem seals. If you go the work yourself, replace the rings, bearings, valve stem seals, all gaskets, main studs, timing belt, water pump, and tensioner, have the block honed, and have the block and head both hydrosonically cleaned, and you can get it done and have a freshly rebuilt, 0 mile motor, for about the price of a "good quality" motor you might buy. I say "good quality" because you won't actually know until you put it in and turn the key, and by that point it's a crapshoot.

rebuilding is probably the best bet, most d15s you can find are pretty shot too and if you get another motor might as well get a d16. But, your cylinder walls probably scratches in them letting the oild slip into the combustion chamber, by your description, alot too. it can also leak through the valve stems. you most likely will have to bore oversize. and all the thigs listed above is basically everything needed for a rebuild.

Don't let the oversized bore terrify you OP, that's standardized rebuilding procedure. Honda sells 0.25" over rings for rebuilds.

Thanks for all the info! I'll definitely start saving to rebuild

It'll be a long time away, but I'll definitely be posting when I do. Its just that I really need daily transportation. The most days in a row I'd have off is 4. Maybe, if I can get motivated, I can buy a b18/b20 swap and rebuild that while still using the d15 then swap it out in a couple days and be good to go. Would doing that be too costly? I want the power but I always planned a bigger swap down the road, but hey, if I have to swap why not go big?

So if they bore it out 0.25 over, it will increase the displacement almost to a 1.7?

yup definitely sounds like piston happn to my D15b also blowing out white and than black smoke soon the piston jus snapped but def jus save up for a rebuild much cheaper or save up enough and jus swap a new motor

Yup, definitely sounds like piston. Happn to my D15b: also blowing out white and than black smoke. Soon the piston jus snapped. But def jus save up for a rebuild, much cheaper. Or save up enough and jus swap a new motor.

Grammar. It is your friend.

No. It probably won't even be enough to bump you into the 1.6 range. You have to remember that displacement is calculated by bore x stroke. It's going to make little to no impact on overall displacement of the engine.

A 92 EX should have a D16Z6.

75mm bore, 95mm stroke gives 1590.5cc displacement
75.25mm bore, 95mm stroke gives 1601.1cc displacement
